member Donald Deficcio said . the Hammonton rotary Club ’ s first major action came after their very first guest speaker , richard Newman , visited and discussed the need for a local hospital . During the next six months , the club raised approximately $ 500,000 , which was the seed money allowing for Kessler Memorial Hospital to apply for a multi-million-dollar bank loan in order to build the facility .
“ i was told by more than one person high up in rotary if there ' s any one hospital in the world that should ' ve been named the rotary Hospital , it was that hospital ,” Hammonton rotary Club member William Donahue said . the club ’ s generosity expands past the borders of Hammonton and even of the United States . in 1985 , the president of the rotary Club started a campaign to help the second and third-world countries that had been suffering from Polio . Since that time , Polio has been eradicated in every country except afghanistan and Pakistan . thanks in part to the approximately 1,300 members that make up southern New Jersey ’ s rotary district 7640 , about $ 1.5 billion has been raised , and it is estimated that more than 2.5 billion children have been immunized around the world , according to a club profile compiled for the Hammonton
Lion ' s Club time capsule project . the rotary Club ’ s contributions to fighting Polio are immense and some Hammonton rotary Club members believe they led the way in the fight , even though some more well-known organizations get more recognition for doing so .
“ Six years ago , the Bill Gates foundation jumped on board and started matching our funds . they like to take credit for it , but it was really rotary . they just jumped on board a couple years ago ,” Hammonton rotary Club member Phyllis Mazzeo said . the Hammonton rotary Club is home to a wide range of individuals , welcoming anybody who wants to help out the community . also diverse is the scope of the work they do , for their generosity also focuses on Hammonton ’ s youth . for the past 15 years , Hammonton rotary Club has given at least one $ 2,000 scholarship per year to local high school seniors .
“ Since 2001 , we ' ve given over $ 40,000 in scholarships , in addition to all the other things we ' ve raised money for and done in this town ,” Hammonton rotary Club member robert Derose said . along with the scholarships , rotary also has sponsored interact clubs , the youth service club arm of rotary , at St . Joseph and Buena
One Sindoni Lane , Suite C , Hammonton ( 609 ) 270-7886 • www . meadowsbridalshop . com regional High Schools , and is in the process of forming one at Hammonton High School . the Hammonton rotary Club has also sponsored the rotary Youth Leadership awards ( rYLa ) at Stockton University for the past 37 years . for rYLa , the club chooses three or four high school juniors each year to attend a four-day trip to Stockton , during which they are encouraged to practice leadership , roleplay and step out of their comfort zone , trying something they ’ ve never done before . Since 1999 , Hammonton rotary Club has invested more than $ 24,000 in the rYLa program , according to the club ’ s time capsule report .
“ those who show passion for service , being community driven , those who excel at school work –– they don ' t have to be straight-a students or anything , but those who put the effort forward to do well –– are normally selected ,” Derose said . the passion for service Derose mentioned is the lifeblood of the rotary Club , and it is always willing to back its members 100 percent on any individual community service projects they may have in mind , such as Derose pushing for $ 5,000 worth of bike racks to be installed in town or club member and former president
