HAMMONTON — Members of the community gathered in the spirit of helping neighbors in need during the Hammonton Cancer Foundation ’ s ( HCF ) 10th annual Helping Our Neighbors Dinner at Villa Winslow Manor on October 14 .
The banquet dinner is the HCF ’ s flagship fundraising event and has raised more than $ 250,000 for local cancer patients during the past decade . The funds raised by the HCF are allocated by the South Jersey Cancer Fund ( SJCF ), an allvolunteer organization founded in 1964 that provides direct assistance to cancer patients in Atlantic , Cape May and Cumberland Counties for when health insurance coverage is insufficient .
Past SJCF President Joseph Mc- Nally was among the approximately 285 people in attendance during the event and said out of the numerous cancer foundations the SJCF works with , the HCF is one of the most well-run and organized due to the dedication of the members and the support of the Hammonton community .
“ We have other organizations like this , but not nearly as organized as this ... They ’ re the biggest individual supporter we have ... If you have the name Hammonton in front of it , that ’ s worth a lot . We might be great and do all our stuff , but the South Jersey Cancer Fund , people don ’ t really realize who we are and what we do . But if you talk about the Hammonton Cancer Foundation , they ’ re going to do- graved clocks honoring them for their dedication to the foundation ’ s cause .
nate to it and they ’ re going to support it as you can see with this here ,” McNally said .
McNally said the SJCF has given out approximately $ 2 million to southern New Jersey cancer patients during the 12 years he served as president , 75 percent of which has been administered in Atlantic County .
The HCF started small and has grown in size over the past decade , but the support they have received has remained consistent over the years , according to HCF president David Mauriello .
“ The thing I ’ m most pleased with is a few things : the growth of our organization — we ’ re up over 30 members now — the acceptance from the community because

we ’ ve clearly earned the respect of the Hammonton community in what we ’ re doing and the last thing is we know that we ’ re going to get tremendous support for our events and those are great things , so we ’ re very appreciative . The last two years have really shown it . We ’ ve raised close near $ 85,000 the last two years ,” Mauriello said .
One of the HCF trustees that has been alongside Mauriello ’ s throughout the past 10 years is Frank Italiano Jr ., who said the Helping Our Neighbors Dinner perfectly captures the theme of neighbors helping neighbors that the HCF aims to promote .
“ If you look around , they ’ re all neighbors here . You walk through the crowd and you see it doesn ’ t matter political party affiliation , it doesn ’ t matter St . Joe or Hammonton , it doesn ’ t matter anything you can think of . Everybody is together for the same cause and it ’ s a beautiful thing to be able to see and everything else is put on the shelf for tonight ,” Italiano Jr . said .
Mauriello and Italiano Jr . were honored by their fellow HCF members during the event ’ s opening ceremony for their longstanding dedication to the foundation .
