HAMMONTON — At 1:22 a . m . on September 18 , police responded to a call of an ATV crash in the 800 block of Eighth Street , Friel said .
Upon arrival , Officer Kyle Ambrozaitis observed a green 2016 Sportsman Polaris rolled on its side , with the victim face down on the shoulder of the roadway , Friel said .
He immediately administered first aid to the victim , who was unconscious and unresponsive , Friel said .
AtlantiCare EMS arrived on location to render aid , and the driver was identified as William Caruso Jr ., 22 , of Hammonton , Friel said .
Caruso was transported by EMS and flown by helicopter for further treatment , according to Friel .
After preliminary investigation of the scene , it appeared Caruso was operating his ATV traveling northbound in the southbound lane of travel , Friel said .
“ It appears he went off the roadway to the left , impacted a rock and dislodging the front left tire of the ATV , continuing off the roadway , impacting with a parked box truck . This impact caused him to be ejected onto the grassy area on the shoulder of the roadway ,” Friel said .
There was evidence that Caruso was operating the ATV under the influence of alcohol , Friel said . He was charged with the following motor vehicle summonses : driving while under the influence , careless driving , reckless driving , failing to maintain lane of travel , unregistered vehicle , failure to possess his driver ’ s license , uninsured vehicle , failure to possess the registration , failure to possess the insurance card and operating an ATV without a helmet , Friel said .
Friel said Ambrozaitis was the investigating and charging officer .
This report is comprised of arrests and investigations made by the men and women of local enforcement . All suspects and arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law .
