Hackettstown resident Marjorie Haley participated in the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University ’ s 10th Annual Plein-Air Event and Competition on
PLEIN AIR , from Page 1 Plein-Air Competition for a year before participating as a contestant for the third time in 2018 . Budden , who has visited landscapes in Connecticut , Maine , Maryland and Wyoming for both competitive and recreational Plein-Air painting , said Hammonton is also home to plenty of picturesque natural scenes to paint .
“ There ’ s some beautiful architecture and renderings here to do in town . There ’ s a real good variety ,” Budden said .
Plein-Air painting is an artistic style that is fun and stimulating for many , but also possesses several inherent challenges , especially the elements , which were a factor during this year ’ s competition on a rainy Saturday morning . However , overcoming these challenges is all part of the fun of Plein-Air painting , according to Christopher Mackinnon , of Monroe Twp .
“ If it ’ s not raining , the bugs show up . If it ’ s a clear day , the clouds roll over . There ’ s just variables that you encounter when you ’ re not in a controlled studio environment … I like to fight off challenges ,” Mackinnon said .
Despite the subpar weather conditions , all contestants were able to submit high-quality works of art within the allotted eight-hour timeframe . Moorestown resident Charles Snell , who participated in his third Hammonton Plein-Air Painting Competition , said he was satisfied with the finished product of his submission — an oil painting of a defunct train car in front of an overgrown landscape in Winslow Junction . Snell said the rainy conditions can actually enhance the work of Plein-Air painters in certain ways as long as their canvases stay dry .
“ Finding a dry spot is important , but the rain actually accentuates the atmospheric perspective because you have veils of atmosphere as you go off in the distance . So , if you look down the road there , it ’ s the same trees that are nearby but they appear much lighter and much bluer . And so , the rain can make for very interesting scenes … It ’ s just the physics of how light interacts with the atmosphere ,” Snell said .
Regardless of the outdoor condi-
September 8 . tions , many Plein-Air painters will argue that being out in the open air in front of a subject is the best way to paint a picture .
“ When you paint from life , you get a painting of life . You paint from a photograph , you get a painting of a photograph . There ’ s more of a spontaneity and a direct emotional response . And just trying to understand natural light and true light , I think the paintings just come out better ,” Marjorie Haley , a first-time contestant from Hackettstown , said .
Once the submissions were framed and assembled , a postcompetition reception was held at the Noyes Museum of Art gallery inside Kramer Hall .
Michael Cagno , executive director of the museum , oversaw this year ’ s Plein-Air Painting Event and Competition , which he said serves the dual purpose of providing local Plein-Air painters an outlet for artistic expression while showcasing the many unique landscapes of Hammonton .
“ The big thing is : it shows off the beauty that Hammonton has to
