Parks and rec votes against beer sales at lake park

COMMISSION , from Page 1 means that from August 15 through September 14 , Beneful will match weekly donations up to $ 1,000 that are raised on the Go- FundMe account . If you ’ re planning to donate to the dog park fund , you would be best served to do it sometime from August 15 to September 14 so that people ’ s donations are maximized .
“ As of this afternoon around 5 o ’ clock , there was about five thousand . They ’ re on target to reach their target . Anyone who wants to go online and donate , it ’ s a match to match up to $ 6,000 or so ,” Pullia said .
There was a lengthy discussion about the possibility of serving beer during the event scheduled for October 2 at Hammonton Lake Park . The event , which is being called “ Cloktoberfest ,” will take place on the same day as the annual Kiwanis Club chicken barbecue . Town council originally voted to allow a beer garden at their August 15 meeting , contingent on having the support of the Parks and Recreation Commission and receiving all necessary permits from the New Jersey Alcohol Beverage Control and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres program . James Borda was the first to voice his opinion on the matter .
“ Our job here is to protect the integrity of the park . I ’ m not so sure allowing this does that . We ’ ll be opening up Pandora ’ s box with this ,” Borda said .
The commission ’ s main concern is , as stated , that allowing the sale of beer at one event will lead to confusing situations regarding events in the future . A motion to approve the idea was disallowed

after five members voted no and only three voted yes for the proposal .
Pullia also spoke briefly about the status of the Hammonton Hawks proposed move to William T . Capella Field .
“ We will sign the lease . We did make one amendment just to protect the town . It doesn ’ t affect the Hawks in any way , we ’ re just trying to protect the town with the $ 220,000 we ’ re going to spend for lights . If we were to get kicked out of there in three or four years , we could get something for the lights and get paid for them . This is for 2017 , so if everything works as planned they will be there in the fall ,” Pullia said .
Hammonton Lake Water Quality Committee ( HLWQC ) representative Otto Hernandez asked Hammonton Public Works Manager / Business Administrator Jerome Barberio about the effectiveness of this year ’ s Hammonton Lake bladderwort spraying .
“ Some of that stuff [ bladderwort ] where it ’ s stagnant , you can sort of see , but not that much . I think where I couldn ’ t spray still continues to be a problem . The middle of the channel , I wasn ’ t able to get near the woods because there were a lot of stumps there ,” Barberio said . Barberio also said that he will present the HLWQC with a map of exactly where he sprayed the lake this year .
The commission will hold their next meeting on September 20 at town hall .

Two new SJHS administrators

SJHS , from Page 3 where students may earn college credits , there are other ideas that will expand students ’ access to courses with a college standard .
“ Stay tuned ,” Caparas said with a smile .
He said there were several reasons students were attracted to SJHS .
“ They look at our principles , our values and our integrity . This is a place that forms men and women of virtue , integrity and respect , both from the academic and athletic sides , always with the goal of creating a relationship with Christ ,” Caparas said .
Caparas asked where he saw SJHS in five years ’ time , and what his goals for the school were .
“ We want our students to come out of St . Joe being good Christian men and women . In any Catholic institution , Christ has to be made known and made present . I see St . Joe as a place where Christ is present in its students , staff and administration . I see St . Joe as a place where our students are coming out of the schools as leaders . If that is our barometer , than we have succeeded ,” Caparas said . Mercado was asked about her role as athletic director . She is also dealing with the challenges of limited enrollment , which was one of the reasons there was not a freshman football team this year . Mercado said volleyball will have a varsity and junior varsity team , field hockey is close to having a freshman team , and basketball will have one this year .
“ I see numbers rising for sports ,” Mercado said .
The Gazette asked Mercado what she felt was more important : Fielding a competitive team or simply being able to put one on the field ?
“ My main goal is giving the student-athletes a positive experience ... It ’ s already here . It ’ s just a matter of channeling what ’ s here and keeping it going . Never be satisfied , and keep sports and academics in balance ,” Mercado said .
Caparas said Mercado has already built a strong rapport with the coaches .
“ I see her as the coach ’ s coach ,” he said .
Mercado said former St . Joseph High School Athletic Director Bill Hiltner has been “ really helpful ” during the transition .
She said she looks for certain qualities when considering a coach for a position .
“ I look for passion . I look for energy . I look for enthusiasm . Basically it ’ s about being there for the athlete , not only teaching them the game , but responsibility and respect ... The important part is having the coaches who can teach it ,” Mercado said .
She cited longtime football coach Paul Sacco as an example of the type of coach she would like to hire for available positions .
“ For him , it ’ s more than about coaching . He respects his team , and they respect him even more ,” Mercado said .
HAMMONTON — Police have been notified that Jose D . Perez- Murillo , 20 , is missing , Hammonton Police Chief Robert Jones said .
“ He was last seen at a birthday party on July 15 . He was reported missing by his sister on August 20 ,” Jones said .
Anyone with any information of Perez-Murillo ’ s whereabouts should contact the Hammonton Police Department ’ s Detective Bureau or have him contact the police himself , Jones said . The phone number is 561-4000 . Cpl . Mark Santora is the investigating officer , Jones said .
