Hammonton ’ s antique stores have plenty of unique items

ANTIQUES , from Page 1 certain items . More often than not , interests in an item can fluctuate over time , and in turn go down in price or up in price . Mazza went on to discuss the pride that some collectors have in their collection , specifically talking about the famous Hess trucks .
“ People don ’ t understand something , Hess trucks were really hot back in the ‘ 60s and ‘ 70s . A Hess station only had 100 of them , and that was it . That ’ s why they were so popular ,” Mazza said .
He laughed , saying that some people would buy two trucks , one to play with , and the other to keep on a shelf somewhere . However , the Hess trucks that came after the
HAMMONTON — The Hammonton Education Foundation will hold Recycling Central from 9 a . m . to noon September 17 at the Our Lady of Mt . Carmel grounds at Third and French Streets .
Fulton Bank will be the major sponsor .
“ Recycling Central has become an integral part of Hammonton ’ s efforts to be a strong green community ,” event co-chair and foundation trustee Michele Hetzel said . “ Helping our community live green while supporting our schools is a win-win for everyone .”
A mobile shredding unit from DocuVault Delaware Valley will be onsite to provide safe , secure disposal of old documents . Newspapers and magazines also will be accepted . All shredded paper will be recycled .
Paper clips and staples are OK , but plastic or metal — including three-ring binders and binder clips — must be removed .

‘ 60s and ‘ 70s are barely worth any money in recent years . Mazza said the best you could get for a Hess truck made after the ‘ 60s and ‘ 70s was maybe around $ 5 . The fluctuation in price for different generations is something that is relevant when trying to figure out what to sell , unless the item has history behind it .
Mazza recalls when one of his dealers purchased a silver spoon , with ties to some of the Founding Fathers .
“ It was made by [ Paul ] Revere , and here ’ s the best . It [ the spoon ] was for [ Alexander ] Hamilton , and guess who bought him the set — George Washington ,” Mazza said .
An item with history , such as the silver spoon , is a hidden treasure for antique stores . The item , if the history is known to the public , could sell for 10 times what someone purchased it for .
Vintage Betty ’ s Antiques is another spot in town for unique antiques . Connie Gilbert , who owns and operates the store , talked with The Gazette about the risks of taking items for inventory in the shop , and what to buy and what not to buy .
“ I know what things are worth , so I don ’ t really haggle too much , normally I don ’ t have to . For the most part people are pretty fair . If I know I can sell it at the store , I would have to get less ,” Gilbert three 33-gallon bags of paper for $ 20 .
Businesses will be charged by the pound at the following rates : $ 50 for up to 150 pounds ; $ 75 for up to 250 pounds ; $ 150 for up to 500 pounds ; $ 200 for up to 750 pounds ; or $ 250 for up to 1,000 pounds .
The shredder has a 10,000- pound capacity . Businesses that wish to participate must reserve their space by September 9 .
The DocuVault truck also will be able to destroy computer hard drives via pierce-and-tear shredding and pulverization . The cost is $ 10 for each hard drive .
Hard drives must be removed from the computers . No other computer components can be accepted . The truck includes a camera that allows donors to watch their hard drives being destroyed .
Proceeds from the paper shredding and hard drive collection will benefit the Hammonton Education Foundation , which funds innovative projects that enhance the quality of education in the Hammonton School District .
The Hammonton Education Foundation — which has awarded more than $ 558,850 worth of grants to local schools since its inception in 2005 — is a 501 ( c )( 3 ) organization . All donations are tax deductible , and letters acknowledging shredding donations will be provided for tax purposes .
Several other community organizations will participate in Recycling Central .
Members of the Hammonton Police Department will collect unwanted , unused or expired medications to ensure they are disposed of properly .
The Hammonton Lions Club , Presbyterian Church at Hammonton , Hammonton High School Green Club and Migrant Worker Outreach of South Jersey also will participate . A list of the specific items each group will collect will be released later this summer . said .
She discussed this topic further , explaining that the shop needs to make a profit . Even if it ’ s an item that will sell right away off the shelves , the store still needs to offer a lower amount of money for the item . Buying the item at market price ensures no profit will be made .
However , Gilbert does not have to deal with this issue often . At this point in her career , Gilbert knows what is worth purchasing and what is not .
At JH Antique Mall , Bernie Pezzuto said that more often than not , people are just cleaning their homes and finding things that they want to sell . Pezzuto explained
For more information about Recycling Central or to become an that there were many ways JH Antique Mall gained inventory for the shop , including yard sales and even sometimes auctions .
She also told The Gazette about how there wasn ’ t really one big ticket item that was selling at the shop .
“ It ’ s so hard to say , because every day is a different event , and every day you ’ re surprised at the things that you ’ ve sold ,” Pezzuto said .
Pezzuto went on to say that collections can change over time , and so do interests . She recalled selling four paintings to one man for his collection just last week , and explained that the paintings were hanging for some time .
