“ A good chunk of it is , so it ’ s hard to differentiate , so this is everything we ’ re doing inside the town of Hammonton , so you at least know where the trimming is now ,” Gerwien said .
Menzel made a motion to approve the application ; Carr seconded the motion , and the application was approved .
One of the street trees to be removed by Atlantic City Electric was the subject of another removal application , submitted by Sam Rodio of 45 N . Fourth St . Though the tree itself — a Bradford pear tree — had been approved with the previous application , the commission voted to approve Rodio ’ s application to have it on record .
Also present to testify for an application was Gary Humphries of 481 11th St . for the removal of two trees , one of which is sickly and the other is in need of pruning .
“ The willow is in really bad shape . The oak is not as bad of shape , but we ’ d like to have that taken down ,” Humphries said .
These tree removals , Humphries said , were part of a larger effort to improve the aesthetics of his property .
“ I have bamboo at the end of the property — a lot of bamboo there — and the neighbors are complaining about the bamboo . I ’ m trying to keep everybody happy , take the bamboo down , take the oak down and probably put up some evergreens or fruit trees around the house ,” Humphries said .
Carr made a motion to approve the application , which Menzel seconded . The application was approved .
The commission also approved the following applications :
• Victor Mazza , 157 Broadway . One tree , dying . Many replacements .
• Anderson , Campanella & La- Guardia , 17 & 23 Marlyn Ave . One tree , no replacement . Dying .
• Duke Bates , 431 Marlyn Ave . Eight trees , no replacements . Building renovations at 200 13th St .
• Equity Trust / Duke Bates , 642 Bellevue Ave . Six trees , no replacements .
• Aja Andujar , 309 W . Pleasant St . Four trees , no replacements . Dropping needles and “ debris .”
• Michael Natoli , 456 13th Street . Two street trees , dead . No replacements .
In other business , Menzel spoke about upcoming events from the Hammonton Green Committee .
“ On Thursday the 18th , from 5 p . m . to 8 p . m ., we have the Green Market on Horton Street . On the 15th of September , we ’ ll have the Green Market again for Third Thursday . On Saturday , October 1 , we have Green Day — hopefully at Veterans Park ,” Menzel said .
Menzel also provided information about an initiative from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority ( ACUA ) called Recycling Partnership .
“ It is launching a pilot testing in Hammonton . They ’ re going doorto-door and either leaving information about recycling or doing interviews with residents who are willing to speak with the trained volunteers or staff who are going around ,” Menzel said .
Menzel said the goal was to examine the impact of receiving information would have on the amount of recyclable materials left curbside .
“ They ’ re going door-to-door with ID and all that ?” Caruso-Cafiso said .
Menzel responded in the affirmative .
“ They ’ ve got safety vests on . They ’ ve got ID that ’ s very clear ,” Menzel said .
Crowley asked about the duration of the program , and Menzel responded .
“ They just started . It ’ s expected to run until the end of next week ,” Menzel said .
Under new business , Caruso- Cafiso asked for a motion for a letter of support to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance for a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection , which Caruso-Cafiso said will distribute trees to area communities .
“ Dan is actually going to write the letter of support for the grant application ,” Caruso-Cafiso said . Menzel commented . “ It sounds like a great idea ; anything for more trees ,” Menzel said .
Carr made a motion to write the letter , which Menzel seconded . The motion was approved .
The Hammonton Environmental Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month . Their next meeting is scheduled for September 14 at 7 p . m .
