2016 blueberry season comes to an end

Inferrera ’ s Market

BERRY , from Page 1
Now that the busy season is over and Hammontonians are scrambling to fit as many blueberries as possible into their freezers to hold them over until next season , local farmers finally have a chance to sit back at least for a moment and reflect on how exactly the 2016 blueberry season went for them .
For one local farmer , this season ’ s crop exemplified quality over quantity .
“ at our farm , we didn ’ t have a very large yield , but what we did have was an excellent quality crop ,” Sam Mento , of Mento blueberry Farm , said .
Mento said that one reason for the decrease in size of his yield was the weather .
“ the mild winter followed by an unseasonably cold april was a main factor that lead to our crop not being as large as we would have hoped ,” he said . this past year leading up to the season definitely was an unpre-

dictable one in regards to the weather , as the winter months saw higher temperatures than usual and the spring saw lower temperatures than what is ideal , growers said .
Farmers also said the colder temperatures in addition to rainfall led to a poor pollination period for the berries , which affected many local farms . this is because the bees whose job it is to pollinate blueberry plants are much less effective if the spring weather is cold or rainy .
“ Well , this season as a whole , production was half compared to last year because of the freeze we had in May ,” elizabeth Condo , of big buck Farms , said .
Despite the lessening of production , it seems as though there was no real affect on the actual prices of the berries . Condo said that the prices were average , nothing below those of other years .
Condo noted that the weather , while not affecting prices , did actually have an effect on the physical condition of the berries .
“ berries this year didn ’ t seem as large as other years ,” Condo said . there are many varieties of blueberries , and each variety blooms at different times throughout the season . For instance , the Duke variety blooms earlier on in the season and the bluecrop variety blooms a little later in the season . the yield of the different varieties can be affected by how the weather is faring at the time the plants produce berries .
“ the weather did affect bluecrop because it seemed to rain more later on in the season while bluecrop was in , and it did split the berries because the rain that we had was a lot in a short amount of time ,” Condo said .
Severe weather does not combine well with harvesting season , because strong winds and heavy rain over a short period of time could easily wipe the berries from the plants and even split the individual berries . Heavy rains may cause the berries to enlarge in size , but it can also lead to a waterlogged taste .
For some farms in Hammonton
, it was business as usual , despite
the fluctuating winter and
spring temperatures , and storms
throughout the summer .
“ the cold spell in april didn ’ t
affect our crop too much , surprisingly
so . We ended up with an average
yield
and
average
production ,” Dan Franchetti Sr .,
of Dan Franchetti Farms , said .
