Places to find treats to beat summer ’ s heat

Mannino ’ s Cannoli Express on Bellevue Avenue in downtown Hammonton is another hot spot in town , with Gabriella Mannino Tomasello at the helm . The shop makes the cannoli ’ s fresh , right in front of your eyes , with shells from Sicily , Italy . Mannino Tomasello started the business with the goal of showing people what a true Italian cannoli tastes like , and she has achieved her goal . The current best-selling items at Mannino ’ s Cannoli Express are the peach and blueberry cannoli , along with the honeycomb gelato . This summer , Mannino Tomasello explained that sales decrease during the week , but rise quickly during the hot weekends . She said that while the heat may drive many customers to the shop , it may not keep them there .
“ Heat has been a good and bad factor . Good in the sense that many people come in and request gelato or an iced coffee . Bad factor is that most people don ’ t want to enjoy the outside seating because of the heat ,” Mannino Tomasello said .
At other locations , finding a place to sit isn ’ t a problem . At Sofia ’ s Supreme Subs , located on the White Horse Pike- , the heat issue is solved by bringing a vehicle . A waitress will meet customers at their car and take their order , all without having the customer step outside the vehicle . This ensures a nice cool resting spot , maybe with the windows down or the air conditioner on , in the summer heat . While still offering their usual menu of specialty sandwiches and subs , the restaurant has seen sales for their milkshakes go up this summer .
Different flavors are available on the menu , but the blueberry milkshake is a local favorite . Salads have seen an increase in sales as well . Sofia Frantzeskos , who is the owner of the restaurant , attributes this success to the different homemade salad dressings . The Caesar and Greek dressings seem to be in popular demand by customers .
The Cold Cow is another local spot around town that sells ice cream . Located on Route 73 in the Ceddarbrook section of Winslow Twp ., the shop has been open since 1991 . The family-owned ice cream shop serves soft serve ice cream in many different flavors , as well as the unique “ Cow-wich .” This ice cream sandwich is a popular choice for the summer at The Cold Cow , but many customers still stick to the soft serve according to manager Alyssa Sorce .
“ We get a lot of regular soft serve with vanilla or chocolate cones . That ’ s probably the most popular ,” Sorce said .
Sorce told The Gazette that sales have definitely skyrocketed this summer , with many hot days . Sorce laughed saying that people
love to get ice cream when it ’ s warmer outside .
“ It ’ s been busy , I think that because it ’ s so hot out and COVID is coming to an end , it ’ s been pretty busy ,” Sorce said .
Mr . Bill ’ s Richman ’ s Ice Cream & Burger Co of Winslow Twp . is well-known for their giant statue of Mr . Bill . The Route 73 eatery has a full food menu , is open year round and features Richman ’ s Ice Cream . Their whimsical menu features a whole selection called “ Mr . Bill ’ s Giant Ice Cream Menu .” Try a sundae in a waffle bowl .
Bears Country Custard , located at 28 E . Black Horse Pike in Folsom , is a popular stop . The roadside stop has many flavors to choose from and decadent sundaes and more on their menu . Try their peanut butter pie ice cream .
Rita ’ s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard on the White Horse Pike features its popular water ice and custard and interesting combinations . Right now , there is the peach pie blendini perfect as peaches are now in season locally . The Reese ’ s Take 5 Sundae is also back on the menu . A lemon water ice is ideal on a hot summer day .
With temperatures rising , it seems like locals in Hammonton have a few different spots to check out when searching for a cold treat on a hot day .
