Before this particular title was
released, there had been articles
and books written about the role of
women in World War II on a national scale, but minimal information about these individuals
exclusively in New Jersey. Chappine was intrigued to research the
women of New Jersey and what
they did to contribute to the war effort.
“I couldn’t find much on New
Jersey [women], articles here and
there, and I knew from all the stuff
that I heard no one really had a
collection of information. I basically get bored during the summer
because I am off for a couple
months from school and work, so
I just started browsing the history
press site. They said if I had an
idea just submit it. I said ‘All right,
I will just send an email and if they
are not interested it isn’t a big
deal.’ The lady started talking back

great idea. At that point I figured I
had to write something about this
subject,” Chappine said.
It took Chappine about a year to
research and write New Jersey
Women in World War II. She discussed the process that led to creating the publication.

but it is really not. Depending on
what historical society you are
talking about, it is really expensive to get somebody in there to
scan documents and do everything. A lot of the work was actually going into the archives, and
physically looking through folders. The research at big universities is probably more digitized,
but with the smaller, historical societies they are still mostly paper.
It was a lot of traveling around,”
Chappine said.
Traveling around the state to research this World War II subject,
Chappine was particularly grateful
