Trees removed on Vine Street , Valley Avenue

Vettese said that the application for the funding is due in November .
“ One of the requirements is that we have to have a meeting with the local aid office and with the metropolitan planning office — which is the South Jersey Transportation and Planning organization ,” Vettese said .
Vettese said that he was going to seek authorization from town council to learn about the town ’ s eligibility .
During his report , Town Engineer Mark Herrmann , of Adams , Rehmann and Heggan Associates ( ARH ), gave an update regarding work currently being done on Vine Street / School House Lane .
“ All the trees are down ; we removed the trees from the streets . We ’ re waiting for material to be delivered to start going further from there ,” Herrmann said , adding that he anticipates work to begin on the road itself in four to six weeks .
Herrmann said that similar progress has been made on Valley Avenue , particularly regarding tree removal . Herrmann noted that a resident on that street was unaware of the project and voiced his dissatisfaction at the removal of a tree .
Councilman Sam Rodio inquired further .
“ The residents would have been notified that there was construction going to be going on , correct ?” Rodio said .
Herrmann answered in the affirmative .
“ When they ’ re doing the work , they need to be told , but the guy did say today that he thought , because the tree was up against the road , he didn ’ t think anybody needed to know — but I said no , they need to be notified ,” Herrmann said . DiDonato agreed . “ If they could let everybody know , notify them when they ’ re going to be doing curb and sidewalk in front of their house — this way , if there ’ s any inconvenience , any trucks , let them know ,” DiDonato said .

Vettese commented further .
“ The other thing I told the individual on Valley is that there ’ s going to be a lot more mess before things get finalized on that roadway , because they ’ ve got utilities , and they ’ re going to make connections to the laterals . There ’ s going to be some other disturbance , but as long as they ’ re notified he didn ’ t have a problem with that ,” Vettese said .
Herrmann also discussed the planned repaving of Old Forks Road .
“ We did some estimates . We can probably stretch the first grant from Winslow to Lahn Lane ,” Herrmann said .
Councilman Steven Furgione asked about the direction of the project .
“ Why don ’ t we start at the Pike and work the other way ?” Furgione said .
Vettese said that the condition of that stretch of road made it the logical first phase .
“ The worst section is from the town line to Lahn Lane . The other thing to keep in mind is , if you ever do anything with sanitary sewer , that ’ s the location . You ’ re probably going to put a pump station near the Puerto Rican Civic Association , somewhere in that area ... the closest manhole is Lahn Lane and Old Forks Road ,” Vettese said .
During his report , Vettese talked about railing and step repair work slated to be done at the Historical Society of Hammonton ’ s museum .
“ We met with the society ; now we know the color and type of the equipment and railings that they want . We ’ ll finish those specs and get something out for that , and see what price comes in ; then we ’ ll go from there ,” Vettese said .
Before the conclusion of the meeting , Furgione said that the town had received a request regarding the Fourth Street water tower .
“ In order for the [ Hammonton ] Hawks to commence with their thing at the middle school , they need storage . In order for them to get storage , the school needs storage to give the Hawks storage . What we compromised with is , we ’ re going to use the water tower to give the school some storage so that that the Hawks can have some storage ,” Furgione said .
Furgione said that the water tower is already being used for storage by the school .
“ They ’ re going to have to tighten it up ,” Furgione said .
DiDonato described the proposed storage facility for the Hammonton Hawks .
“ They ’ re going to get the 50- by-30 metal building near the tennis courts , then they ’ ll vacate the lake 100 percent as soon as they get that building ,” DiDonato said .
