During committee reports , Bachalis gave an update from the Lake Water Quality Advisory Committee , noting that professors from Stockton University will be continuing water testing at Hammonton Lake .
“ They got an internal grant from Stockton University to start looking at E . coli DNA to identify the source of the issue , and hopefully have enough money left in that grant to start mycoremediation trials , using mushroom mycelium to filter out E . coli and improve the quality of the lake water ,” Bachalis said .
Commissioner Amy Menzel , while presenting the report from the Hammonton Green Committee , discussed that body ’ s Green Market on Third Thursdays , which are to be held on Horton Street .
“ We appreciate the town passing
the resolution to allow us to close the road there ,” Menzel said .
Menzel said that June 16 is the date of the first Green Market , which will also be held on July 21 and August 18 . The market will run from 5 p . m . to 8 p . m .
“ This is like a little farmer ’ s market . We have produce from some really great local farmers , many of whom use regenerative practices and have some really nice offerings . Plus , there ’ s crafters and other artists and music scheduled , so it ’ s going to be really wonderful ,” Menzel said , noting gratitude to AtlantiCare for sponsoring the event .
“ That enables us to do a lot more ,” Menzel said .
Menzel also said that an Adopta-Road cleanup is scheduled for June 25 . Interested parties are invited to meet at 10 a . m . at the Atlantic County Library System - Hammonton Branch , located at 451 S . Egg Harbor Rd .
Under the Bicycle / Pedestrian Advisory Committee report , Commissioner Alicia Murphy discussed that body ’ s first bicycle rodeo , which was held on May 22 at Warren E . Sooy Elementary School .
“ Attendance was pretty good ; it was pretty successful . We had a little group show up ,” Murphy said .

“ We were given 50 helmets in total ; they are ours to give out at events . Cross County Connections does do a nice helmet-fitting , if anyone shows up with a helmet that ’ s too small or too large — or no helmet at all . We ’ re going to work with them to do a smaller event at National Night Out ... maybe a mini-bike rodeo , just to encourage people to come ,” Murphy said .
Menzel suggested that a similar event could be held in conjunction with the Green Day Festival in October , and Murphy agreed .
Under old business , Bachalis said that the time had come to dismantle the Leviathan sculpture , and that a contest is being held in conjunction with the deconstruction .
“ Guess how many bags on the Leviathan , and we ’ ll be giving out modest prizes ,” Bachalis said . Menzel corrected him . “ An amazing prize pack ,” Menzel said . Bachalis thanked Menzel and continued . “ An amazing prize pack for the top three guesses ,” Bachalis said .
Bachalis said that deconstruction would take place on June 18 at 9 a . m ., and asked for volunteers to help , and also to count the bags on the Leviathan to ensure accuracy for the contest winners .
“ It ’ s going to take a few hours , so as much time as you can spare on Saturday , June 18 would be much appreciated so that we can get the process done and respond to the folks that are going to be submitting guesses ,” Bachalis said .
While discussing tree removal permits , the commission entertained an application submitted by Atlantic City Electric for the removal of four trees spanning from 555 N . Third St . to 623 N . Third St . in conjunction with a roadwidening project in that area .
Matthew Gerwien , the Senior Program Manager of Vegetation Management for Atlantic City Electric , was present to offer testimony .
“ Verizon already installed the new poles that sit back about 10 feet from where they were . Once we transfer the power lines , the cross arms , the trees that are there , we ’ ll be removing more than 30 percent of the live crown of the tree — which means that , odds are , the tree ’ s going to die . It opens up to insects , pests , disease , rot and all that kind of stuff . The best practice , at that point , is to just remove the tree ,” Gerwien said . The application was approved . Michael and Elena Montecillo , of 894 Central Ave ., appeared before the commission to appeal the partial denial of their application
