Food truck festival expands successfully

by Kevin Troilo
Gazette Staff Writer
HaMMONtON — MainStreet Hammonton hosted its second-annual Hammonton food truck festival in the downtown area on June 11 . More than 30 trucks lined up to serve their unique food creations to a crowd of more than 3,000 hungry guests . there was no shortage of variety to choose from during the event . the food options ranged from things like chicken wings and pizza to ice cream and smoothies . two of those people serving wings were Bruce and Sandy russell , owners of russell ’ s Pic ii on the White Horse Pike .
“ a lot of happy people enjoying our wings so far … it ’ s another successful and beautiful day here in downtown Hammonton ,” Bruce russell said .
While some of the truck owners traveled from as far as Pennsylvania to set up at the festival , others , like eloy Garcia , were from Hammonton . Garcia owns La rosa de Oro , a truck that can be seen at different locations throughout town on any given day .
“ this is our first year here at the festival . it ’ s going good . i am in Hammonton everyday so people know our food . You can find my truck at the train tracks a lot of days ,” Garcia said . also on hand were vendors from throughout the area . they sold items including homemade candles , jewelry , small gifts and even art at the Noyes Museum ’ s Starving artist fair on Second Street . One of the artists displaying his watercolor paintings and comic books was Delfino falciani .
“ it has been a good day so far . i wasn ’ t here last year so this is my first time at the festival . i ’ m enjoying myself , and people are welcome to check out my work ,” falciani said .
Live music was provided by Hammonton ’ s own Stealing Savanah and the Burnsiders , a reggae band based out of Galloway . the upbeat sounds of both groups made the atmosphere even better as people enjoyed their food .
One of the goals of hosting such a large festival is to attract people into Hammonton from out of town . after driving in from Baltimore the day before , Cindy and Jeff Weyant decided to check out the festival and visit the businesses in downtown Hammonton .
“ We were visiting friends in South Jersey , and they mentioned there was a food truck festival close by . We had never been to Hammonton and thought it would be nice to check out the breweries and the festival they talked about . it ’ s a beautiful town , and we ’ re really enjoying ourselves today ,” Cindy Weyant said .
MainStreet Hammonton executive Director Cassie iacovelli and her daughter , Joanna , handled a great deal of this year ’ s planning .
