Hammonton & EHC Kiwanis celebrate 100th at Tomasello Winery

KIWANIS , from Page 1 friends alike all came together to celebrate the accomplishment the Kiwanis Club achieved .
Kiwanis International dedicates it ’ s time towards helping improve the lives of children in the community . With more than 550,000 members a part of Kiwanis International , the organization hosts around 150,000 service projects a year . According to the international website , Kiwanis annually raises around $ 100 million to support community causes , and help the community . Since 1922 , the Kiwanis Club in Hammonton has been active , helping with community members , houses of worship , expenses due to medical care and even giving out scholarships to schools .
The event itself was formal , with men being asked to wear a jacket and tie . The evening opened with cocktails and hors d ’ oeuvres . It was at this time that many people arrived for the event , including Kiwanian and Councilman Sam Rodio , Assemblyman Michael Torrissi Atlantic County Fifth District Commissioner James Bertino , Kiwanian Hammonton Board of Education President Sam Mento , Atlantic County Clerk Joseph Giralo , Councilman Steven Furgione , Councilman Thomas Gribbin , Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti , Councilman Ed Wuillermin , Councilman Jonathan Oliva , Councilman William Olivo , Atlantic County Surrogate James Curcio , and the mayor of Egg Harbor Twp . Paul W . Hodson , also a Kiwanian . Cocktails and alcohol were served at the cash bar during the event , which was crowded the entire night . The workers at Tomasello Winery brought out salads for the guests at the event as well , starting off the food for the night . Jazz music played throughout the night , with a simple melody playing in the background during the social event .
Many other Kiwanis Clubs came to support the event from Division 1 , including Cape May , Egg Harbor City and Galloway Twp . A few other clubs were at the event , including the Key Club from Hammonton High School and Circle K from Stockton University . A few members from each club came to the event , along with their advisors .
Dean Konner , the current Governor of N . J . District for Kiwanis International was also at the event . Talking with The Gazette , Konner explained the reasoning behind the green jackets that many members of the club wear .
“ New York has red because of the Big Apple , Florida is orange because of the sunshine state , and New Jersey is green … because it ’ s the garden state ,” Konner said .
The green jacket is symbolic of the garden state according to
Konner , and helps to better understand representation of states at big events for the club . Konner then proceeded to say that he was going to give a speech and make a joke about being a part of the Masters golfing tournament , hoping to get a laugh .
During the cocktail hour , the Kiwanis Club of Hammonton took the time out to take a photo of the members in attendance at the event . Celebrating 100 years , the club took a photo to commemorate the moment .
The cocktail hour soon ended , and Kiwanis Club of Hammonton Board of Trustee member Bob Schenk walked up to the microphone , and welcomed everyone to the event .
“ Tonight , is the gala event for the Hammonton and Egg Harbor City 100th anniversary ,” Schenk said .
He explained that 150 people were in attendance for the event , and thanked everyone for coming out to support .
