timent many have heard before , LoBiondo highlighted the pertinence of freedom ’ s cost in today ’ s world .
“ We ’ ve all heard that before , but i think about it a lot . especially with what our country is going through now , with the challenges that we ’ re facing and especially the challenges that we ’ re facing from terrorist extremists and enemies that would destroy us , destroy our way of life , kill americans , blow up america , all those different things ,” LoBiondo said . in the midst of these circumstances , LoBiondo noted that there are men and women willing to defend our threatened freedom because they know it comes with a cost , just like many have before them .
“ We have men and women who are willing to put on the uniform of the united States of america because they understand that freedom is not free . they do this because they want to keep the enemy off our shores , and that ’ s the way it ’ s been for more than 200 years ,” LoBiondo said . the congressman expressed the importance of remembering these sacrifices more often than once or twice a year .
“ i hope and pray each time we have a Memorial Day , a Veterans Day , that we don ’ t just think about it on this day because the sacrifices that were made were not just made on one day ,” LoBiondo said .
He also spoke of his experience vising the locations that some of our nation ’ s service members reside in during tours of duty and the importance of recognizing their

sacrifice .
“ i get a chance a couple of times a year to travel to some of these places , i ’ m only there for nine , 10 , 12 days , while our men and women are there for long tours of duty . the incredibly difficult circumstances that they ’ re in , day in and day out , 24 hours a day , seven days a week , so that we here in the united States of america can live in peace and freedom cannot be overstated , cannot be talked about enough , cannot be thought about enough ,” LoBiondo said .
Councilman thomas Gribbin addressed the crowd on council ’ s behalf noting his pride in the town ’ s Memorial Day event .
“ i ’ m happy that this ceremony , the Hammonton Memorial Day ceremony , is one of the strongest in the region . an annual tradition in our town , which brings many Hammontonians together to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day . and whether we ’ re under the sun-filled skies of Veterans Memorial Park or sheltered [ from ] the rain here at our school , we gather to honor our fallen heroes with our presence ,” Gribbin said .
Gribbin expressed his gratitude toward those who have defended our nation and expressed a sense of camaraderie toward the families the fallen soldiers have left behind .
“ So to the soldier , i say thank you . to their widow or their parents that they left grieving , to their brothers and sisters , we mourn the loss of their lives with you . May our words on this day and our actions truly honor their sacrifice ,” Gribbin said .
Gribbin also spoke of the emotional response he has to this sacrifice and asked people to honor what others have given up to ensure our nation ’ s freedom .
“ When i pass by flag-lined cemeteries or i think about the folded flag handed to the grieving family accompanied with the words ‘ on behalf of a grateful nation ,’ it is hard for me not to be emotional … today , all americans should feel that emotion , pause and remember those that died for our country . Sometimes , sadly that sentiment is not always shared . there are those who fail to understand what had to be given in order to win and preserve our freedom ,” Gribbin said .
Gribbin commended the crowd on being an example for others in a time when honoring our servicemen and women remains crucial and relevant .
“ By being here today , you are setting an example for others to follow , and that is as important as ever as we have so many of our finest young americans still serving in harm ’ s way ,” Gribbin said . atlantic County fifth District freeholder James Bertino also spoke at the ceremony , challenging the crowd to recommit itself to the cause of upholding the values members of the military have sacrificed and died to protect .
“ they have given their lives in defense of freedom , and we owe them our deepest respect and gratitude , but even more , we owe them our allegiance to the principles that they gave so much for : freedom , justice and liberty . this Memorial Day is a time to recommit ourselves to those high ideals ,” Bertino said .
Bertino also addressed the loved ones of fallen service members honoring their sacrifice as well .
“ for the loved ones of our fallen soldiers , you more than any-
