Hope Lay
By 2013 , Berenato was living in Hoboken , New Jersey . She said she was working on an acting career in addition to fighting . She produced and starred in a movie called The Honour , which had her playing a young woman who falls in love with another woman .
“ That film was an LGBT film , and was really the beginning of me coming out and [ my ] sexuality – it was really like life imitating art , because my character in the film was coming out and the woman who played my girlfriend became my girlfriend in real life ,” Berenato said .

She felt her background with acting , coupled with her mixed martial arts training , helped her then and would help her in the future .
“ I knew that I had a certain sense of legitimacy and I saw the company going in that direction ,” Berenato recalled . With more women becoming involved in WWE , Berenato felt there would be additional opportunities to move up to the highest level .
“ I wanted to be the first female MMA fighter to step inside the WWE ring . I knew I wasn ’ t necessarily going to be doing backflips off the top rung , but I knew I could throw a good punch ,” Berenato said .
When asked the secret to her success , Berenato used two words to answer the question at first .
