Former member Bermudez named to board of education

SCHOOL , from Page 1 Board of Education President Sam Mento III said .
Candidates drew numbers prior to the meeting to see who would be interviewed first . Bermudez was the first to be interviewed while Polito waited in another area of the building until her interview .
“ Prior to the meeting our two candidates had selected randomly : one or two , and I believe Mr . Bermudez was up first ,” Mento said .
“ My name is Manny Bermudez … As far as my background goes , I am a graduate of Hammonton High School . I attended Stockton College where I received my bachelor ’ s of science in business administration with a minor in marketing . Pretty much straight out of college I got right into banking and I have been in backing since 2005 with retail banking , financial management and business lending , and personal lending as well ,’ Bermudez said .
Once Bermudez completed the interview he waited in another area of the building while Polito was interviewed .
“ My name is Erica Polito , I ’ ve been in Hammonton for about 10 years . I am a lifelong Atlantic County resident and I teach in Port Republic School district , I ’ ve been there for 13 years . I began my career there as a part-time technology teacher and since then have been in the positions of technology coordinator , I ’ ve been a third grade inclusion teacher and I ’ ve been a third and fourth grade math and science inclusion teacher , that ’ s my current position right now … I have degrees in elementary education and special education and I have all of my masters coursework in educational leadership from Rowan , my other degrees are from Stockton ,” Polito said .
After the interviews , the board approved a motion to go into a second closed session to deliberate prior to returning to open session for a vote .
“ At this point I will entertain a motion to go into closed session . The board will deliberate amongst themselves and then we will come out with a motion to appoint a nominee . So with that I will take a motion to go into closed , please ,” Mento said .
Board member John Lyons suggested to Mento that the students from the Hammonton Early Childhood Education Center be allowed to make their presentation before the board proceeded with the second closed session . Mento did not agree and the students waited until after the second closed session to make their presentations .
After returning from closed session , there was an exchange between members of the public and Mento regarding a point of clarification about public comment . Board Solicitor William Donio explained that a point of clarification must come from within the board , not from the public .
“ Quite frankly , for a point of clarification , in order , actually should originate from in the body … If you reference Roberts Rules of Order you actually don ’ t make a point of order from outside the body so if there ’ s somebody here , sitting at the board of education needed a point of clarification , but right now the only thing that ’ s occurring is the board is continuing with it ’ s business , there is no public component to it ,” Donio said .
A motion was then made to appoint Bermudez to the vacant board seat .
“ And with that , after much deliberation … we have two very fine
