Dan Bachalis asks PWTC to test lake for PFAS

HAMMONTON — Dan Bachalis , the chair of the Lake Water Quality Advisory Committee , appeared before the Public Works and Transportation Committee at
their meeting on April 20 . The first matter on which Bachalis spoke was a request to have
Hammonton Lake tested for perand polyfluoroalkyl substances ( PFAS ).
“ Nobody ’ s drinking out of it , so I ’ m thinking if we do find PFAS , it shouldn ’ t be a particular problem
,” Bachalis said . Bachalis noted that the scientists from Stockton University have been studying the lake .
“ There ’ s a potential for a big grant in 2024 to do a full-blown characterization of the lake — and maybe even the watershed — so this would just be one additional
piece of information about the lake so that we have a clear picture of what ’ s going on there ,” Bachalis said . Councilman Steven Furgione responded to the request .
“ PFAS relates to drinking ; it ’ s a drinking-water standard . As far as
I know , there ’ s no standard to test
to ,” Furgione said . Bachalis conceded the point .
“ We would probably rely on the drinking standard as a default ,” Bachalis said .
