COMMISSION , from Page 1 met within the next 17 years . Warburton said she wanted to gauge the commission ’ s interest in supporting a similar resolution , which was adopted in Gloucester twp . about a month ago . the resolution was primarily written by representatives of the Off fossil fuels for a Better future Act , a bill that intends to place a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects and move the nation ’ s electricity , and most of its transportation systems , to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 .
Glassboro is in the process of setting a similar renewable energy goal , according to Warburton . However , she said no legislation has been passed yet . Commission chairman Daniel Bachalis said he has read about similar legislation , which calls for a more proactive and aggressive stance on renewable energy , and commended Warburton for bringing it to the attention of the rest of the commission .
“ i ’ ve read enough that i know that i would support this , but i also want to give the other commissioners more time to read this … it ’ s great to have you here and i ’ m glad Hammonton has such a positive environmental advocate living amongst us . So , this is great ; it really is good ,” Bachalis said . in other news , Bachalis reported on two pieces of correspondence sent by the New Jersey Pinelands Commission ( NJPC ). the first items pertained to Berlin residents Joseph and teresa Midure , who also own a property in Hammonton , located near the intersection of 14th Street and first road . Bachalis said the letter received from the NJPC was in regards to an 11,550-square-foot stone parking area built on the property owned by the Midures that was developed within protected wetlands and destroyed the required buffer to the wetlands .
As a result of the violation , Bachalis said the NJPC has declared that the parking area has to be removed and the area must be restored to its original condition , or the Midures can meet a variety of conditions as an alternative , such as planting several seedlings of trees native to the Pinelands and helping eliminate non-native , invasive species . the second piece of correspondence pertained to the construction of an expanded , 22,469 square-foot parking lot , located at 470 S . White Horse Pike , that is owned by Jri and Sons LLC , the company that owns Joe italiano ’ s Maplewood inn . Bachalis said when the construction of the expanded lot was approved , the application required the construction of three storm water management infiltration basins to retain storm water , which were never developed and are now being enforced by the NJPC pending permit approvals .
Bachalis questioned why the basins were not initially constructed during the expansion of the lot .
While reporting updates of the commission ’ s 2018 work plan , Bachalis announced that the he applied for a $ 1,500 Open Space Grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commission ( ANJEC ), which would

help fund a $ 18,998 project whose goal is to remove non-native , invasive plants from Hammonton Lake Park and replant the area with native plants . Bachalis said he sent the grant proposal to Hammonton Public Works Manager / Business Administrator Jerome Barberio for budgetary advice and received valuable feedback from commission member and Hammonton Green Committee member Amy Menzel , whose fellow committee members sent a letter of support to pair with the proposal .
“ i ’ ve looked at proposals for agencies for multiple decades in my past life , and this letter of support was superlative . So , i want to thank you for that ; it was really good ,” Bachalis said . the commission should receive a response from ANJEC no later than friday , May 11 , according to Bachalis . in other news , Councilwoman Brooke Sacco attended the meeting on behalf of town council and reported that she has been corresponding with the rest of town council ’ s Quality of Life committee ( which she is the chair of ) regarding a potential ordinance that would prohibit the mass release of balloons into the air due to the environmental hazard they pose when they pop .
Sacco said she received a positive response to the idea , but was told that other area municipalities have implemented such ordinances and have found it difficult to enforce .
“ it ’ s sort of unfortunate that we have to deal with it , but really , how are the police going to go after groups of people for releasing balloons ?” Sacco said .
Due to the difficulty in enforcing the ordinance , Sacco suggested an educational campaign at local establishments , such as schools and churches , might be a more effective method to spread awareness of the environmental hazard of balloons .
“ if we want to pursue [ an ordinance ], we can pursue it , but i feel like i see enough things where time is spent between the
