Vettese said that the work on the White Horse Pike — a complete repaving that extends from Atco Ave . in Waterford Twp . to Route 206 — is proceeding .
“ Right now , they ’ re doing curb and drainage work up in the Winslow Twp . area . We ’ re probably talking about paving that later this spring , in the latter part of the spring . But , they ’ ve got to get the curb work done — and , actually , part of the curb work is going to be at the firehouse . They ’ re getting closer to Route 206 . By the time they do that , they might be not too far from doing the paving work ,” Vettese said .
Vettese ’ s report also gave an update about projected work at the Hammonton Lake dam on the White Horse Pike , noting that the New Jersey Department of Transportation ( NJDOT ) will begin inspecting the overflow pipe that
crosses under the Pike later this year .
“ The lake will be lowered in early November to allow this inspection to occur . As authorized by council , we sent a letter to the NJDOT and NJDEP [ New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ] requesting that both agencies review the potential to consider the reconstruction of the dam structure sometime in the future to comply with similar improvements that have been completed in other dams in South Jersey . We also sent the letter to various other groups to seek letters of support for the project ,” the report stated .
Vettese then spoke about the improvements to Route 54 , particularly the proposed water main replacement .
“ We did have two public hearings on that , and that particular project is geared towards the replacement of the water main along

12th Street , from First Road — where it ’ s a 12-inch main — and it would go all the way to Second Road , which is a mile . That would tie into a 12-inch main on Second Road ,” Vettese said .
Vettese said that the goal is to relocate the main into an easement area , as opposed to installing it in a paved shoulder of the road — where the present main is located .
“ There ’ s a sanitary sewer that extends up 12th Street , just to the top of the hill from Second Road . When you place a water main and sanitary sewer in parallel , they have to be about 10 feet apart , so we ’ re asking for a 20-foot-wide easement in most cases . We do have a 15-foot-wide easement for sanitary sewer in that first section ... so we ’ re going to ask for an additional five feet so we can get that separation of 10 feet ,” Vettese said .
Vettese said that a letter was sent to affected residents , but response had been minimal .
“ So , what we ’ ve been doing is , we ’ ve been calling people . One Saturday I spent knocking on doors — and , actually , no one has really objected to granting an easement ... There ’ s 49 property owners . Actually , we contacted 31 , and all 31 were positive — so we ’ ve got 18 left to track down . I think we ’ re ahead of the game ,” Vettese said .
Vettese ’ s report stated that ARH will be providing a cost estimate at the April council meeting to provide additional survey and locations along the project route to allow for the relocation of the water line into the easement areas and revise the base plans accordingly , and to provide the legal descriptions for utility easements along the westerly side of 12th Street and the southerly side of North Chew Road .
Vettese encouraged residents to contact him with questions at ( 609 ) 567-4300 , ext . 101 .
“ I can meet people before work , after work , weekends , whatever it takes ,” Vettese said .
Councilman Steven Furgione noted that placing the water main in the easement would present a potential cost savings , but time was of the essence .
“ We want to get this done before the state does their milling and paving and all the work they have to do out there ,” Furgione said .
Councilman Edward Wuillermin said that this project “ has to get done .”
“ There ’ s no avoiding replacing this main , because this main is falling apart . If we can ’ t get it done this way , it ’ s going to be a very costly process the other way . And , if the state goes forward and hammontongazette . com
