Two new sergeants bring Hamm. Police Department total to six

JONES, from Page 1
will specifically focus on nar-
cotics intelligence and enforce-
ment with the assistance of other
county, state and federal entities
privy to local illegal drug opera-
tions.
Jones said the intent of this nar-
cotics unit will primarily be to im-
prove the department’s drug
enforcement by focusing more on
the individuals who are supplying
drugs within the community,
rather than targeting drug users
themselves.
additionally, Jones said the unit
will be able to utilize its resources
to help local residents find help
for drug addiction.
“if someone is need of help or
looking for help. They’ll have the
knowledge and resources to guide
them in the right direction, or
make phone calls to assist them
with that … We all have contacts
if someone comes in here … But
they’ll have a little more knowl-
edge and a little more contacts
than the normal officer,” Jones
said.
Meanwhile, the newly-added
sixth police sergeant will be as-
signed to the town’s traffic unit,
which will key in on improving
community safety through traffic
enforcement, as well as working
with the county and state to re-
ceive funding for various im-
provements to road signage for
motorists and pedestrians.
“He focuses on problem areas
in the town for enforcement. also,
he’ll do some education, he works
on grants, he attends county and
state meetings to keep us up to
date on the latest grants and trou-
ble areas out there,” Jones said.
Much like the approach of the
narcotics unit, Jones is hopeful to
increase public safety through tar-
geting specific areas in Hammon-
ton where traffic safety is an issue.
“i’m hoping to lower our fatal
accidents, slow people down with
some enforcement. also, his job
will be to target some problem
areas, some signage issues and
make some corrections where
need be,” Jones said.
