Cappuccio : SJA curriculum will prepare students for real world

SJA , from Page 1 emphasize writing … because you will not convince me otherwise … can ’ t be convinced that the most important skill that your son and daughter needs is the ability to speak articulately , and to write ,” Cappuccio said .
Cappuccio believes focusing on skills like writing and public speaking allows for the school to prepare students for different tasks in life . Creating an opportunity for students to engage in public speaking early on will make them less intimidated as time goes on , while writing allows for students to articulate their thoughts on paper .
“ We ’ re going to make coding a mandatory class … coding … is a 21st-century skill that ’ s very sought after with employers . Knowing how to work with that computer , telling computers what to do … i don ’ t expect them to master it , but just the ability to work in that space , and to have an introduction to it ,” Cappuccio said .
With technology advancing , coding is becoming a crucial part of the immediate future . Many different employers look for different skills , and coding is no exception . By sophomore year students at St . Joseph Academy will have an advantage over other peers who don ’ t know how to code or program in the next few years . Financial literacy is also a mandatory class sophomore year .
“ Financial literacy must , must , be a requirement … they have no idea what the concept of money is and that is rapidly changing for us … they need to know when they graduate college ,” Cappuccio said .
Having a class revolve around finances helps to prepare students for the real world and allows them to handle their finances wisely . Students will be able to create a budget for themselves and learn how to manage their finances when the time is right . Some high schools don ’ t offer the class , which is why St . Joseph Academy wants to give their students the best chance at success .
“ Junior year is global encounters because they ’ re mature enough at 16 and 17 years old to start exploring the world around them … we will have a nonwestern history course … and i don ’ t mean the Greeks , or the romans or ancient egypt . i mean Middle east , African history , Asian history , india , things that we don ’ t ever learn about … we ’ re entering a more globalized world , and they will be working in a more globalized world and a more globalized market ,” Cappuccio said .
With the global market expanding , students will have to adapt and learn about different cultures , further expanding their knowledge , and giving them a look at the world and not just the country they live in , Cappuccio noted . During their senior year , students will be able to branch out of the set curriculum and make different choices for themselves .
“ Three electives in the senior year , one of them will be a prep period ,” Cappuccio said .
Not only will the prep period help students to manage their time and workload , but two other
