Monday, February 25, 9:30 a.m. Pedestrian crossing detail is March 25 HaMMONtON—On March 25, the Hammonton Police De- partment will be conducting a pedestrian crossing detail in downtown Hammonton, Ham- monton Police Lt. Kevin friel said. “the detail is designed to have officers monitor the crosswalk using a decoy and to make sure motorists stop for the pedestrians within the time and distance as per state law. We also look for pedes- trians who are not properly cross- ing at crosswalks,” friel said. friel said the state is funding the project. “this project is fully funded through the New Jersey Division of Highway and traffic Safety. Sgt. Jason rigby secured this safety grant for the Hammonton Police Department, with the goal of this project being raising awareness to motorists and pedes- trians, ensuring a safe and pleas- ant experience for everyone who visits our downtown Hammonton area as well as the entire town,” friel said. friel said New Jersey has one of the highest rates of pedestrian-re- lated crashes in the nation. “Projects like this are specifi- cally geared toward keeping resi- dents of New Jersey safe by reducing these crashes,” friel said. SCAM, from Page 1 friel, a 26-year member of the Hammonton Police Department, underscored the importance of po- lice-community interaction when policing a community. “Part of the reason why i’m here today is because of the inter- action, because it’s important to be able to share information be- cause the real way to police a community is to have everybody’s involvement,” friel said. friel’s presentation provided the seniors in attendance with sev- eral safety tips that ranged from how to protect oneself from com- mon internet and telephone scams to preventing burglary and rob- bery. When criminals successfully execute telephone scams, such as illegitimate solicitations of charity and disaster fund donations or fraudulent calls from the internal revenue Service (irS) regarding pending legal action for delin- quent tax payments, friel said eld- erly residents are often targeted deliberately due to the genera- tional gap between them and those attempting to scam them. “they know the way we were raised … they know what we like to do: What’s right. We like to help, we’re part of that generation, right? We’re the Baby Boomers: We’re the ones that are doing what we’re supposed to do because that’s the way our parents raised us,” friel said. friel said the best ways to avoid being scammed by any suspicious phone call asking for money or personal information is to request that the caller send a formal notice in the mail regarding the matter, look up and call the official phone number of the entity to check the legitimacy of the phone call, and to never give out any personal identifying information over the phone. in addition to their money and identity, friel also gave advice for how seniors can prevent their ma- terial possessions from being stolen in a burglary or robbery. even in a seemingly quaint com- munity like Hammonton, friel said it’s crucial that residents lock up their valuables when leaving them unattended, especially those inside their homes. “i’m a cop; i have a gun. When i’m home, or someone else is home, the door is locked … My house isn’t huge, but if i’m in my back room, i can’t hear what’s going on at the front door. i cer- tainly can’t hear. i don’t want somebody sneaking in or walking by Gabe Donio G azette S taff W riter Lt. Friel warns seniors about scams Debbie Fabrizio Debbie fabrizio (angelastro), 41, of Vineland died peacefully on feb- ruary 21, 2019 at home with her loving husband by her side.
