MLK Day of Service observed in town

SERVICE , from Page 1 washable and multi-purpose . The leftover scraps from the T-shirts would be used to make into dog toys so that every item is being used . The bags that were made will be donated to the Hammonton Family Success Center Food Pantry .
“ The bags will be donated so that way , the food recipients can carry their food everywhere week after week ,” Birchler said .
Nyren Ruffin took part in the upcycling activity as a way to give back to the community and help exemplify the meaning of Martin Luther King Jr . Day , which is unity in being able to work together and help others .
“ I feel like it ’ s very important for volunteers to come out and just pay homage to MLK and all of the things that he has done and sacrificed for everyone and just to show that unity for everyone , which is what he represented ,” Ruffin said .
Down the hall featured a block printed card activity , where it featured the fundamentals of block printing . With cardboard paper , glue / glue sticks , sharpies , paints , paint rollers and different stickers for design , volunteers were creative in their block printing as various cards showcased different designs . As part of a service project sponsored by the Noyes Museum of Art , the block printed cards are made into Valentines Day cards and will be donated to the Assisted Living Center . Liaison for Event Planning and Promotion Sarah Lacy said that this event is to provide art education to the community .
“ We are trying to do something that is within our mission statement of providing art education to the community so we ’ re doing the fundamentals of printmaking with linoleum blocks for our card making activity and we are trying to produce as many cards as possible while also introducing people to this art practice ,” Lacy said .
The Carmel Children ’ s House inside the St . Joseph Center on Third Street helped make birthday bags for families with birthdays who wouldn ’ t have the resources to celebrate a birthday . The birthday bags included cake mix , can of frosting , party supplies and a blank card that families can fill out .
Lisa Lorusso , who is the lead guide for the Carmel Children ’ s House , put together the bags with the help of her three small volunteers , who are all three-anda-half years old . Thirty bags were put together and will be donated to The Unforgotten Haven in Blackwood .
The supplies were collected from families from the Children ’ s House as well as parishioners from St . Mary of Mount Carmel Parish .
