Leon Vaccarella

On Friday , January 13 , 2023 , Leon Vaccarella “ slipped the surly bonds of earth ” and made his final flight to heaven , where he was welcomed by his Heavenly Father , his wife Annetta , and family and friends who had gone before him . Leon lived 99 years of a full , rich life . A week before he passed , “ Vacc ” called several family members to say “ goodbye ”. His message was clear . He wanted each one to know what a wonderful life he ’ d had , that he loved them , thanked them for the love and many kindnesses he ’ d received , and to tell them he was ready to go . He passed peacefully in his sleep a few days later .
Leon was born December 1 , 1923 in Hammonton to Antonio and Josephine Vaccarella ; both having emigrated from Gesu , Sicily . He grew up with a sister and five brothers on a small farm the corner of 13th St . and Chew Rd . Leon ( or Ollie as they called him ) was the last of this “ band of brothers ” Joe , Nein , Frank , Sam and John and his sister , Lena . He and his siblings were the first American-born generation of the Vaccarella / Macri family . Leon graduated from Hammonton High School in 1941 . He was drafted in 1943 and assigned to the US Army Air Corps . He was a bombardier during WWII . After the war , Lt . Vaccarella was stationed in Germany where he met his wife , Annetta , who was there with her father and family stationed at the same base . They were married in Schleisheim in 1948 . Lt . Vaccarella went on to become a pilot in the USAF . He and Annetta raised a family , moving about the country to various bases , eventually settling at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls , Texas .
At Sheppard AFB , Leon served as a B-52 pilot and aircraft commander in the 864th Bomb Squadron Strategic Air Command until he retired in 1965 . After retiring from the USAF as Lt . Colonel , Leon worked for the US Postal Service until1987 . Leon was passionate about his family , his service to country and community . He loved being involved in the lives of his children . He served as a Boy Scout Master and he took pride in seeing sons Tony and Joe become Eagle Scouts . Leon was an avid bridge player and achieved Life Master Certificate in 1996 . He continued to play up until he was 98 . He was a good neighbor and friend to many , always willing to help out if needed . He loved to garden and always had a bountiful garden and fruit trees wherever he lived . Hunting and fishing were favorite pastimes .
Leon is survived by his daughter , Glenda ( James ) Jeter ; sons , Joe ( Sherrie ) Vaccarella and Anthony Vaccarella ; six grandchildren , Krysten ( Coy ) Chastain , David Vaccarella , LeeAnn ( Matthew ) Price , Jay Vaccarella , Leslee ( Kris ) Henning , and Bryan Vaccarella ; and 10 great grandchildren , Katelynn and Karsyn Vaccarella , Jace Vaccarella , Wyatt , Jolee , Oliver , and August Henning , LilyAnn and Samuel Price , and Kyndle Chastain . He also is survived by many nieces and nephews residing in the Hammonton / South Jersey area and in Florida . Except for the last few years , Leon would travel to Hammonton to attend the family reunion , which has taken place every August for 65 years . He was the last of his generation in the Vaccarella family and he will be greatly missed by everyone .
A visitation for Leon was held Thursday , January 19th , 2023 at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home , Wichita Falls , Texas . A funeral service followed on Friday , January 20th . A graveside service with full honors were heldWednesday , January 25 at DFW National Cemetery . Charles S . Ballin

Charles S . Ballin , 84 , of Folsom , N . J . passed away peacefully Thursday , January 19 , 2023 surrounded by his loving family . Charles was born and raised in New Brighton , Pa . and graduated from New Brighton High School . He was a devoted Roman Catholic and was proud of his rich Croatian heritage . He proudly served in the United States Army for 23 years , and was the Recipient of a Purple Heart . During his honorable service , Charles traveled and built a life with his family . Charles retired from the military in 1979 as an E8 First Class Master Sergeant . Charles was a selfemployed building contractor and worked for Guerrier Electric for 15 years . He was a past Grand Knight 4th Degree , North American Martyrs Council # 8718 , and a lifelong member of the NRA .
He is predeceased by his loving wife , Theresa J . Ballin of 46 years ; his parents , Mark and Frances ( nee Fabyanic ) Ballin ; his sons , Charles Ballin Jr . and Robert Littleton ; and his brothers , Thomas , James , and Andrew Ballin . Charles is survived by his children , Christopher Ballin ( Regina ), Linda Lyons , and Stephen Ballin ( Kathy ). He is the loving grandfather “ Poppy ” of Gabrielle and Christopher Ballin . He will be sadly missed by his companion , Debra Hannah ; and multiple grandchildren , nieces , and nephews .
Relatives and friends were invited to attend his viewing Tuesday January 24 , 2023 from 6 p . m . -8 p . m . at the Marinella Funeral Home 102 N Third St . Hammonton , N . J . 08037 . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday , 11:30 a . m . at Our Lady of the Lakes Church 19 Malaga Rd , Williamstown , N . J . 08094 . Cremation will be held privately following the Mass . Burial with Full Military Honors will be held Saturday January 28 , 2023 12 p . m . at Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery 240 N Tuckahoe Rd , Williamstown , N . J . 08094 . POLICE , from Page 1 observed a man arguing with a bank employee ,” Friel said .
The man was identified as Wilbert Chapman , 69 , of Wilmington , Del ., Friel said .
“ Mr . Chapman was attempting to cash a check that the bank had contacted the company the check was issued from . The company confirmed the check number , but the name on the check and the amount of which the check was to be drawn were not correct ,” Friel said .
Chapman was placed under arrest , transported to police headquarters for processing and released pending a court appearance , Friel said . Friel said Scola was the investigating and arresting officer .
In other police news , at 11 a . m . on January 21 on the 500 block of S . White Horse Pike ( Route 30 ), police responded to check the well-being of a subject , Friel said .
“ The subject was fine , but the other subject on scene , Christopher Tomasello , 28 , of Hammonton , was found to have two active warrants , one from Berlin Borough with no bail amount and the other from Winslow Township for $ 550 ,” Friel said .
Tomasello was transported to police headquarters for processing

John O . Young “ Jack ”

John O . Young “ Jack ”, 87 , of Egg Harbor Township , died at home on Sunday , January 22 , 2023 . He was raised in Margate and graduated from the Atlantic City High School , Class of 1953 . Jack began his career at the South jersey Gas Company , retiring after 43 years , in charge of data processing . In addition , he spent eight years in the Naval Reserve . He was an active member of the Margate Community Church serving on the Boards of Deacons and Trustees . Jack has a special group of friends whom he joined on numerous ski trips and weekly gatherings at the Rugby Inn . He also enjoyed trips to Florida , the Poconos and ocean cruises with Nancy .
Jack is predeceased by his parents , Oscar and Verna Young ; and his daughter , Jennifer . He is survived by his wife , Nancy ; and sons , Jeffrey ( Mary ), and Daniel ; and grandson Ryan ( Dana ).
A visitation will be held on Saturday , January 28th beginning at 11 a . m ., followed by a celebration of his life at 12 p . m ., at Margate Community Church , where friends may share fond memories of Jack . Hugh L . LaMonaca , Jr .

Hugh L . LaMonaca , Jr ., 88 , of Hammonton , N . J ., passed away peacefully Sunday January 22 , 2023 , just two days shy of his 89th birthday . Hugh was born in Philadelphia , Pa , and moved to Hammonton at a young age . He graduated from St . Joseph High School in 1951 . He earned bachelor ’ s and master ’ s degrees from Temple University , and then served two years in the United States Army . He worked in aerospace engineering for General Electric and later Lockheed Martin . Hugh was a member of the St . Vincent DePaul Society , Hammonton Rotary Club , and the Knights of Columbus Pallotti Council # 3471 . He also served on Hammonton Town Council in the early 1970 ’ s . After retirement , he traveled frequently and earned a Master Gardener certification .
Hugh is predeceased by his parents , Hugh and Bridget ( nee Matteo )
LaMonaca ; brother , Edward F . LaMonaca ; and his sister , Carmelia De- Ficcio-Ziegler . He is survived by his loving wife , Jeanette ( nee Macri ) LaMonaca ; his sons , Vincent ( Cynthia ) LaMonaca and Michael LaMonaca ; his daughter , Maria LaMonaca Wisdom ( John ); and his sister , Louise Wigglesworth ( Robert ). Ellen Marie Losse

Ellen Marie Losse , 67 , of Lakewood Ranch , Fla . passed away on Thursday , January 19 , 2023 . Ellen was born and raised in North East Philadelphia by her parents William and Mary Trimble . She lived most of her adult married life in Hammonton , N . J . and Delaware . Ellen went to work in the insurance industry , eventually becoming a manager with Blue Cross / Blue Shield . She met Warren while working at Transamerica insurance in Philadelphia . Ellen was very involved with the St . Joseph Church during her time in Hammonton . After retiring , she and Warren moved to Lakewood Ranch , Fla . where she became an engaged member at Our Lady of the Angels . She served as a Eucharistic Minister , Lecturer and a Sacristan . Her biggest love and passion was teaching children about Religion .
Survivors include her husband of 32 years , Warren Losse , Jr .; Sisters , Marie and Kathleen ; Brother , William ; and Brother-in- Law , Ronald ( Chris ) Losse .
