Historic Downtown Beaufort...
In the company of the beautiful port cities of Charleston and Savannah is historic Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort is located just 7 miles from Habersham on Port Royal Island, one of the large Sea Islands along the southeast coast of the United States. Beaufort is unique in that its entire downtown has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a historic district.
Union troops occupied Beaufort and as a result, it was one of the few southern towns to escape destruction. More than fifty historic structures have been identified and include many lovely private homes beautifully restored and available to tour. Whether on a walking tour or by horse-drawn carriage, the romance and history of Beaufort’ s Old Point is an experience not to be missed!
Art galleries, antique shops and modern boutiques are within the downtown walking area, not to mention fine dining and quick eateries. Regional malls and the nearby Bluffton outlet centers also help make this area a shopper’ s dream. The moderate climate is perfect for enjoying the outdoors almost every day of the year.
Hollywood has had a longtime love affair with Beaufort and has featured the quaint town as the setting for some memorable films such as The Big Chill, White Squall and Forrest Gump. Largely unchanged by the years and celebrity influence, some refer to Beaufort as a“ mini Charleston”, that has all the romance and charm, but maintains that small town feel.
