Local NAACP Representative Attends Annual Leadership 500 Summit Under New National CEO
Former Pensacola Branch President Eladies Sampson attended the 13th Annual Leadership 500 Summit ( L500 ) in Hollywood , Florida over the Labor Day weekend . The L500 focused on social change , professional development , and community leadership at its annual event which was held Thursday , August 31st through Saturday , September 2nd in Hollywood , Florida prior to Hurricane Irma hitting South Florida . The summit was also held under the leadership of the new Interim National President , Derrick Johnson . The theme for this national event was “ Breaking Barriers and Leading the Future ”. The summit has become an opportunity for professionals across the finance , education , politics , legal , healthcare , environmental and social justice sectors to convene and develop initiatives that will foster progressive social change and advocacy across the country .
Six people received a $ 500 scholarship award from the local NAACP . They were : Arianna Moore , Tyree Randall , Jaylan Rawlings , Michael Roberts , Kyndall Rideau and Gerrod Nobles .
On July 22 , 2017 , the executive committee of the NAACP National Board of Directors unanimously named Derrick Johnson as Interim President and CEO . Derrick Johnson formerly served as vice chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors as well as state president for the Mississippi State Conference NAACP . A longstanding member and leader of the NAACP , Mr . Johnson will guide the Association through a period of re-envisioning and reinvigoration . Until a new president is selected , Mr . Johnson will serve as the NAACP ’ s primary spokesperson . The three day summit consisted of a series of panels and discussions on the role of faith leaders in the civil rights movement , the work of the NAACP , strategies for personal and professional development , and resources on how attendees can give back to their respective communities . As the new NAACP National President Johnson commented , “ This year ’ s summit lands at a turning point in both the history of our Association , and of our country as a whole ,” Johnson said , “ We are combating threats to our civil liberties , both old and new , and it will take a coalition of industries and professionals , such as the L500 , to move
