The quality is not in question and this is underscored
by the fulsome praise and high ratings achieved in such
reputable publications as the “Malt Whisky Yearbook”
and “Jim Murray's Whisky Bible”.
Lark, Sullivans Cove, Overeem and Nant have all had
enviable scores, great write-ups and awards which are
the envy of many, more widely known, global brands.
And there is also considerable variety amongst the
eight current producers as between the different types of
whisky within the Tasmania classification including the
various rye whiskies from the Belgrove Distillery.
However, it is Hellyers Road, in the north of the island
and a long way from competitors, which stands apart in
terms of scale of production and commercial reach.
Quick Maturation

An enviable feature of the industry in Tasmania has
been the phenomenally quick maturation which the
product enjoys. There are a number of theories as to
what lies behind this but the most likely one is the
tendency by most distilleries to use much smaller casks –
usually of 100 L capacity – rather than the bigger
receptacles used in the traditiona
