Many North Koreans have no concept of homosexuality nor other similar concepts. There’s little information about the status of LGBT+ individuals in North Korea, except that they are treated as abnormal; the most notable information comes from an openly gay defector, Jang Yeong-jin.
He says that he spent nearly 40 years without knowing about homosexuality. At one point, he told a neurologist about his feelings, and was swiftly yelled at. He eventually left for South Korea because of his attraction to men. Jang says he knew of people in similar predicaments. Currently, he’s the only openly gay North Korean defector.
