H5 bird flu found in the wild across Australia
In August 2026, H5 avian influenza( bird flu) was detected in wild birds across multiple Australian states following its initial arrival in June 2026.
There were no cases detected at that time in commercial poultry or the broader agricultural industry.
While the risk to the general public remains low, everyone can play a role in protecting Australia’ s wildlife, livestock and communities.
If you see multiple sick or dead wild birds or wildlife:
• Do not touch or collect them.
• Record the location, date, species and number of affected animals.
• Take a photo if it is safe to do so.
• Report sightings to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
