MIPs recommended by Science Taskforce
LANDHOLDERS
Driving Change ( LDC ) is one of two Major Integrated Projects ( MIPs ) recommended by the Great Barrier Reef Water Science Taskforce and funded by the Queensland Government . LDC operates in the Bowen , Broken and Bogie river catchments , from where one-quarter of the sediment reaching the Great Barrier Reef originates .
The project ’ s primary goal is reduce sediment run-off by tackling large-scale gully erosion . The other MIP aims to reduce nutrient and pesticide run-off from cane and banana farms in the Wet Tropics region . Each MIP aims to concentrate efforts at a catchment scale and evaluate their effectiveness .
Mapping training available
LDC hosted a successful
FarmMap4D workshop for graziers in March . We will organise more workshops for landholders who want to complete this training . Contact Rodger Walker or Brendan Smith to register your interest .
Beef Week participation
LDC project panel member Bristow Hughes and LDC Senior Grazing Officer Brendan Smith attended Beef Week . Bristow was a guest speaker and spoke about the LDC project . He and Brendan also helped man the Office of Great Barrier Reef stall .
Collinsville washdown bay
The LDC project is funding a washdown bay in Collinsville ,
at a cost of $ 9000 as a result of landholders raising their concerns about on-farm biosecurity at the Biosecurity forum earlier this year . The washdown facility will be constructed in Darby Munro Park on Davidson Road . LDC funding will fast-track the project and allow Whitsunday Regional Council to move onto planning a second , larger one for bigger vehicles to use . Work will begin soon on the Darby Munro Park facility and it will be available for anybody to use .
