The day we have all been waiting for is just around the corner! The cafeteria is under construction and is said to be done before the end of the semester. Prior to the cafeteria, our lunch has been coming from a portable. After we get our food, we have to find some place to eat on campus, not to mention the line for lunch is extremely lengthy and slow moving. The new cafeteria is quite a big excitement for many students who cannot wait for it to be open. Our seniors, class of 2016, were promised a cafeteria when they were just freshmen but sadly did not get it until now. Senior Brianna Ornelas, was thrilled about the idea of a new cafeteria but now that she is a senior she is sad that she will not get to enjoy it as long as she hoped.

Now that it’s in the making we are counting down the days until the grand opening so we can finally eat somewhere comfortably. According to Canutillo Independent School District’s Central Office, the cafeteria is to be approximately 9,000 square feet and will include 320 square feet for an office, bookroom, and a counselor’s office. The open area of the cafeteria consists of about 5,000 square feet including spaces for a stage, storage and restrooms. The total amount spent on this project was $137,606.89 with a budget of $550,000.00. It is supposed to have many booths and tables as seen in any high school cafeteria. Not only will this cafeteria be used to eat but will also be used as a multi-purpose room for certain events. For instance, our traditional movie nights could be taken place in the cafeteria, or it could also be used for Coach Grado’s physical education class. It could also be used for having talent shows or even presentations for our classes.

Before our cafeteria was built, our school had a blacktop where students would go to play basketball, soccer, and volleyball. We had to sacrifice it for the cafeteria, and of course many students were very disappointed and upset. Many students will be thrilled to learn that the cafeteria will include a basketball court where intermurals will take place. There are endless possibilities of events that can take place in the cafeteria; which is great for our school. The cafeteria will also offer more food choices which will be a huge benefit to our students and teachers because it will keep them on campus and save them plenty of money. “The cafeteria will help bring everyone together instead of them going to the park or up to EPCC,” said Brianna Ornelas. The time is almost near and the wait is over, our cafeteria will soon be open for many to enjoy!
