A day filled with meaningful art is a day well spent. Located in Downtown El Paso area was an event called “Chalk the Block” (CTB). Many people come down to view all diferent artworks from a variety of artists. Since its first event, CTB has quickly become one of El Paso’s premiere events and the largest free three-day public arts festival in the Southwest region; drawing over 32,000 people annually. Not only does this event just have a wide variety of artwork but also a whole parking lot for just food trucks! Each year, about 200 local, national and international artists from all different places participate at CTB creating a fun, quirky and diverse environment for people of all ages to enjoy. The event features: Temporary interactive art installations, live dance and theatrical performances, a sidewalk chalk art competition, live bands, art and food vendors, access to various activities and exhibits at both the El Paso Museum of Art and Museum of History and more!

CTB was held on October 9-11 this year, with guest artist and founder of Hungry Castle of Barcelona, Dave (aka Danger). Who is known for combining public art and fashion with his unique creative vision. Constantly searching for new ways of thinking, Dave strives to make cool stuff happen around the world. One of Dave’s work this year was Laser Cat. Imagine an inflatable cat the size of two jumping balloons, with lasers shooting images out of its eyes into the crowd. That is what Dave created. The lasers are a great way to show visual art and to engage the crowd.

Chalk The Block is a great event to go and spend some time observing the different artists around El Paso. What is one reason not to go? After all it's free! Come down next year and experience all the great activities and artworks they have to show.
