Unsung hero: Kim Phan
Recognizing her for recognizing others,
and her many contributions to AHS
Ian MacLeod
Associate Editor
Associate Editor Kim Phan has been a
member of the Green Wave Gazette
for four years, rising to the role of
associate editor during her junior and
senior years. In addition to writing and
editing articles; implementing, customizing and maintaining our web
page, Kim’s dedication and commitment to the newspaper is vast.
In addition to her smart and offbeat
sense of humor, and her popular crosswords and word jumbles, we think
Kim’s most notable achievement was
her idea to spotlight a deserving, yet
perhaps unheralded AHS student in
each print issue. In October of 2013,
she wrote the first “Unsung Hero”
Marianna Porcello. Since then, every
issue has featured an Unsung Hero.
For her last Green Wave Gazette, we
decided to turn the tables, naming
Kim Phan, the Green Wave Gazette
Unsung Hero for Spring 2015.
In addition to serving on the Green
Wave Gazette, Kim has served as
captain of the tennis team, vice presi-
dent of the student council, treasurer
of the national honor society, and as a
member of the Improvables, the Math
Team, and the Green Team. We will
certainly miss her contributions to the
Green Wave Gazette, and wish her the
best of luck.
When did you first join the
Green Wave Gazette and why do
you think you stayed with it for
four years?
I joined freshman year because my
friend asked me to join with her. She
quit after a month, but I (thought)
“Ehh whatever; I’ll stay.” (To make a)
long story short, I really got into it and
became online editor sophomore year
and associate editor for the next two
years.
What are your plans for the future?
Well, I am going to school for political
science. My main goal is to become a
congressional press secretary, so I
want to go into the communication
side of politics as opposed to straight
politics – with all the advertising people.
Why do you think you are interested in political communications?
I like writing speeches, and I like organizing things. Running campaigns
would be something I would want to
do. And, there was a project we did
sophomore year, running and making a
campaign for one of the elections. I
went really hard in that, spending
hours writing speeches and doing research. I just thought that was really
fun. Shout out to Mr. Lanner!
Have you decided where you will
go to school yet?
Some of my top schools are kind of too
expensive, so I will probably go to
UMASS Amherst. It’s a good price for
a good school.
Last question - what would you
do for a Klondike bar?(This was
Kim’s signature question for almost all
Unsung Heroes.)
Wow! I have mixed feelings about
Klondike bars honestly. There are
times I would wrestle a lion for a Klondike bar, but there are other times
where I’m just not feeling it.

Green Wave Gazette Seniors
Jilliane Mortimer
Alessandra Vento
In addition to Associate Editor Kim Phan, the Green Wave Gazette featured two more members from the Class of 2015. Jilliane
Mortimer and Alessandra Vento joined the staff as juniors. While Jill contributed articles on a variety of subjects she was passionate about, Alessandra was coerced into joining because she was always helping us before she actually joined. We will miss both of
their contributions and look forward to hearing about their post AHS progress. We would also like to acknowledge past members
Amanda Doherty and Alanna Halloran ,who were a big help last year. We also thank Amie Chambers, because although
she was only a member for a little while, she persuaded Kim Phan to join during freshmen year.
