RYE
MEADS
y favourite reserve ever? This is
one of the few questions that I can
answer immediately, withought
thought or contemplation.
'Rye Meads'.
This reserve has a plethera of outdoor activities including bird watching from the vast expanse of hides across the reserve, or just having a nice walk and admiring the wetland. And what's more, the wildlife is bountiful. It greets you with it's fresh chorus from the moment you step out from the visitor's centre and doesn't leave you until you step back in. It isn't located in the most likeliy of places - the sewage works at the back of an unnatrctive street, but I think the advantage is that most people don't go there because of it's location; Rye meads has no brown RSPB signs. Have a picnic
At Rye Meads, there are no allocated
'Picnic areas' - you find yourself a
nice spot in a hide or by a pond, and
eat! I love that - you can picnic wherever; whenever, and mum makes the most delicious sandwiches! If you remain very still, the wildlife will begin to collect around you as you munch, going about is usual business even though you're there. And when you finish, move away but watch the crumbs left over - a bird will almost certainly hoover them up!
