The Great Gatsby (e.g. Jun. 2014) | Page 7

Did you feel that Tom Buchanan was rude or immoral by trying to control Daisy’s love?

Nick: I don’t think Tom deserved to be with Daisy, as Jordan explained to me that she never wanted to marry him. She ran out on the wedding, but Tom compelled her to stay with him, spurning her true feelings for Gatsby. Tom was generally a braggart who held himself too high, always thinking that nothing could go wrong in his life. Everything he expected to never happen occurred. I did not enjoy his company and I don’t think Daisy did either.

How did you end with Jordan? Any regrets?

Nick: Jordan and I ended in a fight over the telephone. I yelled at her over something unimportant, just because I was infuriated by the inconsiderate actions of Gatsby’s friends. Jordan didn’t deserve that, but I felt a compelling need to vent my anger. I definitely regret acting the way I did as I still have feelings for her, but after seeing the outcome of Buchanan’s marriage and Gatsby’s love life, I can’t be too quick to make life-altering choices.
