The great barrier reef is the world's most extensive coral reef ecosystem, covering an area of over 340.000 square kilometers. The reef between 15 kilometers and 150 kilometers off shore and around 65 Km wide in some parts. It was inscribed as world heritage in 1981 and is one of the most significant natural wonders of the world. The great barrier reef consists of 2,500 individual reefs of all different shapes and sizes with a large variety of marine life.

The great barrier reef is located on the coast of Queensland, Australia from near the southern coastal town of Bundaberg, up past the northern tip of Cape York. and is a very popular tourist attraction, drawing in 2 million visitors from all over the world each year.

The great barrier reef is home to some of the most unique species of marine life in the world including; more than 1,500 species of fish, one third of the worlds soft corals, 134 species of sharks and rays, six of the world’s seven species of endangered sea turtles and more than 30 species of sea mammals. Some of these marine species are found only in the great barrier reef and are incredibly rare.
