The Great Barrier Reef receives the runoff from 38 major catchments which drain 424 000 km squared of coastal Queensland. Over the past 150 years sediment inflow onto the Great Barrier Reef has increased 4 to5 times. The runoff is coming off the coast of Queensland and the reef continues to be exposed to increase levels of sediment. There are major programs dedicated to improving water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef, including the Reef Rescue package and the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan and the marine monitoring program. However, it is likely to be decades before the full benefits of these initiatives are seen. With these harmful pesticides we are polluting the beautiful ocean of the Great Barrier Reef.
