The Isle
of Wight

n a recent visit to The Isle of Wight my
husband Michael, and I visited Alum Bay,
well known for its multi-coloured sand cliffs and
stunning views across the Solent. Queen Victoria
was mesmerised by the 21 sandstone shades of
the cliffs that surround the bay, and many homes
around the world, including mine, have a glass
object filled with sand as a memento of a visit to
the bay.
Stand at the viewpoint high on the cliffs above
Alum Bay and you get a fantastic view of The
Needles, a row of three columns of chalk. The
formation takes its name from a fourth needle-
shaped pillar called Lot's Wife, which collapsed in a
storm in 1764. The remaining rocks are not at all
needle-like, but the name has stuck. You also get a
breathtaking view of the world famous chairlift that
takes visitors to see the Needles rocks and the
coloured sands below.
The Island’s most famous landmark attraction has
so much more to enjoy than just stunning views; it
is the destination of the world famous Marconi
Monument, and the precise location where
Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian inventor and
electrical engineer, along with George Kemp,
created the very first permanent radio transmission
company. That was the beginning of all
telecommunications in the 19th century.
The Needles are one of the most photographed
