(continued from page 9)To make the book even more enjoyable, Frank teamed up with cartoonist and poster designer W. W. Denslow, whom he had worked with on Father Goose: His Book, to create over 100 illustrations for it, including 24 in color.

With the success of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Frank was able to put all his efforts into writing. He wrote many more Oz books, starting with The Land of Oz, and eventually wrote, in total, 13 Oz sequels himself, with over 20 more written by others after Frank’s death. He also wrote several other books, many under different names, including the Mary Louise stories, the Aunt Jane’s Nieces series, and The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. Never having lost his love of theater, he also made a stage play of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Many other adaptations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz were made over the years, both by Frank and by others. The most famous of these is the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.

In the inscription to a book that Frank once gave to his sister, he wrote that

“to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward."

In writing so many wonderful books that have brought such great enjoyment to children all over the world, Frank achieved his greatest success.
