The First Annual Alphonso Jackson, Sr. Benefit Golf Tournament will be held at Keys Gate The upcoming First Annual Alphonso Jackson, Sr. Benefit Golf  Tournament is sure to be a blessing in more ways than one.  This widely anticipated event is designed to give golfers of all levels an opportunity to participate.  It will also be a source of support for The Urban Construction Craft Academy.  Pastor Alphonso Jackson was inspired to support the organization after a presentation by Mr. Bill Dozier on behalf of the UCCA. Mr. Dozier was accompanied by one of the participants in the program. Listening to this young man express with tears in his eyes, what a positive impact the organization has had on his life, touched the heart of Pastor Jackson and he was compelled to help. Jackson has committed a portion of the proceeds from the tournament to UCCA. Although UCAA is located in NW Miami-Dade, Pastor Jackson is pleased that it will be located at Robert Morgan in South Miami-Dade as well. The Urban Construction Craft Academy is committed to preparing participants for the global workforce. The program offers a model of employment by which participants learn through hands-on experiences and apprenticeships, the routines of work, and acquire skills necessary in the construction industry. The ultimate goal of UCCA is to develop skilled tradesmen and tradeswomen who can eventually become entrepreneurs in the local and global labor market. The success of UCCA can be attributed to its Four Phases to Success where participants engage in Program Introduction, Mastery of Skills, Character Building Training & Leadership, and Placement.  Urban Construction Craft Academy’s enhanced jobs programs combine technology, personal growth, character building, and highly qualified (state certified personnel) mentors from the construction industry,  and certified teachers, counselors and administrators, to provide hands-on experiences for individuals looking to transition into the workforce. The Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, November 8th at the beautiful Keys Gate Golf and Country Club located at 2300 Palm Drive in Homestead.   Pastor Jackson is committed to making this an annual event that will serve as a source of support to worthwhile organizations. Each year he plans to identify a different non profit to share in proceeds from the event. Pastor Jackson and the Second Baptist Family are encouraged by the early support for the tournament. Some of the pastors looking forward to the event include Pastor Steven Caldwell, Pastor Arthur Jackson, III; Pastor D. L. Powell; Pastor Curtis Thomas; Pastor Carl Johnson, Pastor Nathaniel Sweeting and Bishop Randall Holts, among others. A number of individuals from businesses, Greek organizations, churches, public service and others have already confirmed. Even if you are not a golfer the event will be lots of fun and an excellent opportunity to enjoy a great afternoon in South Florida. All skill levels, male and female are welcome. There will be a luncheon and silent auction after the tournament and is open to the public. The luncheon cost is $35. For more information on the tournament call 305-232-0499 ext 106 or 786-510-4085. LYDIA’S LEGACY TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL TEAL OVER MIAMI FOR GYNECOLOGIC CANCER AWARENESS SEPTEMBER 21, 2013 Lydia’s Legacy will host its second annual Teal Over Miami on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Courtyard Marriott Coconut Grove Sapphire Room. Lydia’s Legacy was founded by Carin Ross Johnson of Miami, FL in memory of her mother, Dr. Lydia Greene Ross. The organization is dedicated to raising awareness, funding research, supporting survivors and supporting education about gynecologic cancers. Its annual fundraiser, the Teal Over Miami, will feature a silent auction, live music, health and wellness exhibits and raffles. “Since our first Teal Over Miami, I continue to be amazed by the support from the local community,” says Johnson. “This year’s event will focus on service to cancer patients. We have asked attendees to bring hygiene products, journals and puzzle books to support newly diagnosed women with cancer. We also feature the best dessert bar in Miami, all in “teal,” the awareness color for women’s gynecologic cancers.” Proceeds from the event provide funding for cancer support and education in the MiamiDade community. Since its founding in 2011, Lydia’s Legacy donated more than $15,000 to organizations focused on gynecologic cancer research, survivor care and finding a cure for these cancers in Charlotte, NC and Miami, FL. Lydia’s Legacy partners with the Doctor’s Hospital Gyneoclogic Oncology Unit and other community organizations to bring attention to gynecologic cancers. To mark the occasion, attendees are encouraged to wear “teal” attire highlighting the color “teal,” which is the awareness ribbon color for gynecologic cancers. In addition, teal toes for women and teal ties for men are appropriate. Betty Davis, WPLG Local 10 Meteorologist will serve as Mistress of Ceremony. If you would like to purchase tickets for the Teal Over Miami or want more information ab out Lydia’s Legacy, visit www.tealovermiami.com or www.lydiaslegacy.com. About Lydia’s Legacy Dr. Lydia G. Ross was a leader in the MiamiDade Community and lost her three year battle with stage 3A Endometrial Cancer on June 20, 2010, surrounded in love by her family. Lydia’s chief concern through her battle with gynecologic cancer was that there was not enough awareness or visibility about gynecologic cancer issues in the community. Hence, the idea of “Lydia’s Legacy” was formed as an organization targeted toward growing awareness, education and research regarding gynecologic cancers. During Lydia’s memorial service, teal ribbons were given to more than 300 attendees and thousands of dollars in donations to the National Foundation for Women’s Cancer were raised and donated in her honor. The Coconut Grove Courtyard Marriott is located at 2649 Bayshore Drive, CoconutGrove, FL 33133.
