Provence is rich in diverse habitats and here are two excellent places to stay where the gardens are truly worthy of a visit.

In the category of classic and chic accommodation, Le Mas de Guilles, Lourmarin well deserves membership in the Relais du Silence chain to which it belongs. The house is ancient, beautifully restored with elegance and, much appreciated in the sunny climate of Provence – it has a pool. The restaurant is not the least of the attractions: good chef, elegant service and perfect food.

For a stylish stay, take refuge in a restored farmhouse hidden in the countryside of Le Thor. It’s called "Le Color Lavande”. You will be received by a young Swiss couple, Jacqueline and Alex Renaud, formerly of Geneva, both speak English (as well as German and French). In the organic garden is an ecologically and environmentally friendly henhouse. There is a bit of a climb up a spiral staircase to the mezzanine bedroom with access to a high-roofed bathroom (but what a discovery!). Organic wins.

How to get there

Avignon train station is easy to reach from Paris and takes from 2 hours 36 mins. You can go direct from London in just 5 hours 49 mins (details: voyages-sncf.com). It's not easy to get around by public transport, it's best to hire a car or a tour guide.
