Vannes: The hidden road for restaurants:

Just outside the old walls of the departmental capital of Vannes lurks a hidden gastronomic treasure. If you pass by the cathedral and head for the Port Prison (yes it really was the prison) keep left and find the Rue de La Fontaine you will find a great collection of restaurants both French and ethnic. My favourite is Terroirs run by a husband and wife team. I discovered it by chance a few years ago just as they set up. They both worked at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant in the UK the husband being the head wine water, so you can imagine the quality of wines they serve. What’s really good is that each course has a wine especially chosen. Each week the menu changes. Even better is that the menu without wine is only around 30€. Having sampled the wines you can then buy them to take home as the wall of the restaurant is lined with a superb collection to suit every budget.
