The Luberon: A band of hills and mountains running east from the Rhone valley to the Alps, froms a regional park and protected area, it is where Peter Mayle's "Year in Provence" is set. The area is largely a protected natural area, with dry, wooded limestone hills.

Verdon: An area along the river Verdon, crossed by rivers running down from the Alps, cut through by deep gorges the most famous of which is the Gorge du Verdon the depest gorge in Europe at 20 km long and 300 metres deep.

Lavender blooms from late June to August and is harvested from mid July to late August, the exact time being dependent on the region, the type of lavender plant and the weather.
