The Marie Curie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( NICU ) cares for around 400 newborns annually . This is the most advanced NICU in Romania and it ’ s where the most difficult cases are admitted .
The NICU allows parents to stay beside their babies 24 / 7 to care , feed and love them . This NICU has the only human milk bank and exclusively supports the patients of the unit . The milk bank is a crucial part of the care that is provided here . It will need to be upgraded and enlarged in the near future to fulfil the needs of all patients .
Lack of public funding and a decrease of donations during 2020 have made it hard for this incredible project to sustain itself . This matching campaign raised funds to ensure that in 2021 , the NICU would have enough supplies , such as sterile single-use teats and bottles , to last throughout the whole year . Now , the Marie Curie NICU can fully function without having to worry if they can afford supplies .
