Despite the uniqueness of these programs, significant similarities were identified, including: support is secured from executive leadership; awareness and understanding is cultivated across all departments; product specification decisions are inclusive of end users of products; and evaluation efforts focus on quantitative assessments.

The time has come for City of Philadelphia to take this important step and institute a sustainable procurement program. Working towards becoming the greenest city in the nation requires nothing less.

It is for this reason that the prioritization of sustainable business procurement became a key component of SBN’s Good Economy Challenge. Since then, SBN have been working closely with Philadelphia City Council and the new administration toward the institution of a sustainable procurement policy. While this initiative will require long-term engagement, we anticipate some substantive movement in the early part of this year, beginning with Philadelphia City Council holding public hearings on the issue.

SBN Discusses ‘Pricing Carbon to Clean the Air’

SBN’s Executive Director, Jamie Gauthier, sat down with Public News Service in late December to discuss the need for carbon pricing and the opportunities for its implementation offered under the Clean Power Plan. "'It’s reasonable to assume that if some of this came from the way that we were acting economically that it can also be improved by acting in a different way economically,'" said Gauthier of the need for business to be part of the solution to climate change.
