ВЛАДИМИР ПОЗНЕР Журналист, телеведущий VLADIMIR POZNER Journalist, TV Host ‘What do you mean when you ask: ‘What is your favorite country?’ To live in? Or to visit it as a tourist? It makes a huge difference. Take a man going to Mexico with no command of Spanish at all. He loved it very much there. But what does he know about the country? How deep could hee st feel it? His conclusions are shallow as he is just a tourist. I love Japan infinitely. I have been there five times or so. But I do not know a word. I have not been to a single Japanese house. Have not lived there, do not know a thing about the Japanese housing and communal services, have not paid the taxes, have not dealt with red tape. Just paid considerable amount of money for which I was driven around the country and saw different sights and I liked it. Very much. But I give myself reference that I don’t understand a thing about Japan. Most of all I like France where I was born. Love the food, wine, the lifestyle of the French, humor, the way any waiter in any eatery would ask me: ‘Well, how was it?’, the spirit of freedom, and so on and so forth. I go back there every year, sometimes twice or even three times. It does not mean I do not like other countries. I am going to visit Iceland for example. I think it will be wonderful. I love Italy (very much), I love Spain. But I love them as a foreigner, you see? I rarely come back. And if I come back – because I have not seen enough, have not gained enough to my satisfaction. And I come back to France because I feel well there. This is what love is’. It was a cruise on the largest private catamaran in the world through the islands of French Polynesia. Tahiti, Bora Bora, Murea, Huahin, Raiatea – we saw pineapple fields, visited Gaugin museum, went swimming with sharks, fishing... When we travel without kids, we like to take little luggage and travel at far distance spending a day or two in each city. One of the most memorable trips was visiting Japan (from Tokyo to Osaka to Kyoto), then Singapore, then Maldives, then Dubai. We flew from Los Angeles and ended in Nice – it took us about three weeks’.
