VENETIAN CASTLE
A castle of historical
importance in Bochali area,
about 2 km from the town.
According to written records,
its inner part housed the
capital of the island and was
constructed to protect the
locals from the attacks of Turks
and pirates (the construction
of the castle’s walls and
fortifications was completed
in 1646). Unfortunately, the
continuous earthquakes
damaged the fortification
works, resulting in their
continual reconstruction.
Inside the walls you will find
the stone arched prisons, the
powder keg, the main bulwark,
remnants of the drainage
system, as well as many
churches.
