ΠΛΑΤΕΊΑ ΑΓΊΟΥ ΜΆΡΚΟΥ
Λίγα μέτρα από την πλατεία Δ. Σολωμού, βρίσκεται το
ιστορικό αυτό σημείο όπου κατά το παρελθόν άνθρω-
ποι του πνεύματος έδιναν εδώ ραντεβού και αντάλλασ-
σαν απόψεις. Ιστορική γιατί αποτέλεσε πεδίο επανα-
στατικών πράξεων και γεγονότων που σημάδεψαν τις
εξελίξεις στο νησί όπως το 1797 οι ποπολάροι (κατώ-
τερη τάξη) έκαψαν το «Libro d’oro», τη χρυσή βίβλο των
ευγενών. Κατά το Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, οι κατακτητές
απαγχόνισαν δυο νέους Ζακυνθινούς ενώ το δέντρο
της ελευθερίας συμβολίζει την απελευθέρωση από τους
Ενετούς. Το όνομά της το χρωστά στην καθολική εκκλη-
σία του Αγίου Μάρκου που δεσπόζει στο χώρο.
AGHIOS MARKOS SQUARE
A few meters from D. Solomos square, there is this historical spot, where in the past
thinkers used to meet and exchange views. It is of historic interest, as it was a field
of revolutionary actions and events that marked the island’s history, such as the
burning of the “Libro d’Oro”, which was the gild bible of noble people, in 1797 by
the popolari. During the World War II, the conquerors hanged two young men from
Zakynthos, while the tree of freedom stands for the liberation from the Venetians.
It was named after the catholic church of Aghios Markos that looms over the area.
