DIONISIOS SOLOMOS SQUARE
This is the central and largest square
of the island. It was named after the
national poet of Greece, with his statue
adorning the center of the square, a
copy of the initial statue, created by the
sculptor Giorgos Vroutos. It is at the end
of the central dock of the port and hosts
a number of religious and cultural events.
In the past years, this spot was cover
by the sea, which was landfilled during
the expansion of the city. The square is
surrounded by impressive buildings such
as the Town Hall, the Post-Byzantine
Museum and the Intellectual Center.
The square is a popular meeting spot
fro locals and visitors, ideal for relaxing
summer strolls.
